Im not sure which to choose, which is best damon braces or incognito (only thing putting me off incognito is the price) if the also agrees i may also have a fucntional appliance (advansync/herbst) would i still be able to get incognito with the appliance or will i have to have ones at the front of my teeth?

Damon will have you finished in 2 weeks, no extractions, no pain, and your face will not cave in. I'm kidding just go with what the ortho suggests in my opinion.

How much rougher on the lips are ceramic vs traditional?

Difficult to say really, I've not experienced any irritation from the brackets themselves, only the wire at the back when it gets too long and needs cutting.

I have ceramic (upper jaw only yet). I've had no problems and very little discomfort. The brackets feel rough for about 3 days until you get used to them. They are certainly far smaller than the metal ones I had as a teenager.
My advice would be to go with whatever your ortho thinks is best and not have your heart set on any one type of braces in case they are not suitable for you.

I have ceramics on top (In-Ovation C) and metal on bottom (Damon) and they're rely quite comfortable. I would say that maybeeeee the ceramics snag a bit more, but only because they're a bit bigger and that also could be due to my teeth positioning.

Please make sure you go to a board certified ortho (not a dentist), and go with the choice(s) the ortho recommends. Don't get swayed by the trade name and the advertising hype. There are plenty of posts on this board regarding pros and cons of various types of brackets and other forms of treatment. I have ceramics top and bottom and have had no trouble with them. I am also one of the very fortunate ones who experiences virtually no pain.

I've always worked under the premise that if you're going to do the job, do it right. Make an informed decision and make the choice that should give you the best and most stable result.

I am in the "do I really want to do this even though I know I need to do this and if I need to do this I want to do be as inconspicuous (sp?) as possible" mode. I always tend to be pretty mental as I wait for things to happen. (as I am sure you will see with my other posts.)

I should just start a blog as I am doing this with one or two kids, and focus on the humorous part of treatment and not stress over the small stuff as much.

One more ceramic question. Coffee vs the clear ligatures? How bad do they really stain? Don't have many vices, but coffee is one.

I thought long and hard before I got my braces. Ceramic braces aren't invisible and the wire is also quite noticeable. I have spoken to someone with ceramics before and I didn't initially think they had braces, just looked like they had really bad teeth! people will still notice them! Where as metal braces are very obviously braces, they cost £500 less, I was told they would work quicker and I wouldn't need to worry about staining because I could just have dark colour ligatures. It was an easy decision in the end!!

Most of us go through the difficult decision-making process that you are engaged in now. My ceramic experience has been relatively easy; they're relatively unobtrusive. I've found the clear or smoke ligs or powerchains are extremely inconspicuous and get only minor staining from coffee or tea, and none that I notice from red wine or tomato sauces. In the end you'll wonder why you spent so much time worrying.

I am a curry fanatic. I told my ortho that I would consider yellow ligatures a "dental emergency" so she put metal ties instead. You don't notice them at all and they never stain even when I had curry 8 times in one week! The actual ceramic brackets don't discolour so they look as clean as the day they were put on. Oh, the metal ties don't stick out or poke me either.

I don't disagree, close up, ceramic braces look like you have too many teeth all over the place, but from a distance you can't tell, same with photos with flash, whereas someone with metal braces I instantly think they look like a child/teenager.

What looks more professional on adult males? Ceramic or metal. Actually neither really looks professional, but which makes us old guys going to get braces look less odd? Or will just let my wife decide.

Yes, I will drive everyone with nuts with questions until the day occurs. Actually afterwards also. Will just have better stuff to talk about.
