Are trans-palatal arches used for adults?
I've been reading about trans-palatal arches. I just have a question that maybe someone could help me with - are these suitable for adult teeth? I'm in my 30s. I think I read somewhere else that they are not effective for adults, but I can't remember where.

Re: Are trans-palatal arches used for adults?
Hi Eryn,
Ive read both that they do work & that they dont, I hope they do as my dentist is planning on using an ALF appliance to reopen extraction gaps in my upper arch, & to widen (I think both arches, if not just the upper).
Ive heard the ALF appliances are good for working with adult teeth/bones (Im also in my 30's). Ive also heard other adults both here on Archwired and elsewhere saying they've had success with RPE, etc so perhaps at least for some palate expansion is a success.
All the best.

Yes TPAs are used on adults. I had one placed to prevent my molars from migrating forward after having two premolars extracted. It did cause some expansion even though that is not what my ortho was trying to accomplish.

Thank you both for your replies.
Jumptheditch, I had to look up what an ALF is. This would seem like the right solution for my upper teeth, because the arch is slightly 'v-shaped', it might make it more rounded and so create more space for the front to move back. I think I will mention it to my ortho next time...
So I'm also wondering if this appliance is always just used on its own, or can it be used in conjunction with a brace?
I hope that's not a silly question! I'm just trying to figure out what my orthodontist is thinking. He mentioned at the consultation about creating room on top somehow without needing extractions, but also gave me the impression I would be getting the normal damon brace on top, same as on the bottom.
