Los Angeles ortho?

#1 Post by chromegrill »

Im currently in the market for a new ortho in the Los Angeles (ish) area. Im just really unhappy with the way my treatment has been going. Im too old to have any friends in braces and too young to know any parents with their kids in braces... so my source of referrals is pretty limited :) Looking online has really only offered a bunch of paid, sponsered doctors. (Many of whom Ive already consulted) Im not looking for lots of 'PR Hype' just a GOOD doctor.

Huge plus if theyve worked w. Local surgeons on surgical cases... because im having surgery as well.
Im currently in in-ovation braces, but at this point im more interested in the doctor than anything else. Im prepared to start from scratch.

So yes, any ortho suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated.

:)

Hi, I'm in LA too, and about to start treatment with Dr Stephen Yu in Encino. I'm not sure which part of the greater LA area you're in, so hopefully that's not too far.

You can google him, and also check out his Yelp review page.

I like that Dr Yu and his staff were very upfront about everything and he came across as a down-to-earth and honest doctor, which I greatly appreciated. I didn't feel rushed during the consultation, where he was very thorough and methodical. Most importantly, he did not want to extract perfectly healthy teeth for no reason. The other ortho I consulted suggested 4 extractions - and I ALREADY have all 4 wisdom teeth taken out!

Their office also provided a printed, detailed pricing sheet, which I found to be fair and transparent. Even during my initial "no obligation" consultation visit, I was given a comprehensive and informative folder with lots of articles/suggestions etc for life in braces, FAQs etc.

With regards to surgery, I know that Dr Yu's office has solid recommendations, as the office manager was even aware of certain Kaiser dental insurance plans in order to get to the best surgeons. (As it turns out, I didn't need surgery, but it was good to know that they were very aware of who to go to and how to keep costs down).

I hope that helps, even though I haven't started actual treatment yet, so perhaps my limited experience should be taken with a pinch of salt. I hope you find an orthodontist and surgeon that treats you right!

Chromegrill,

I don't know where in LA you are, but if you're willing to travel, I'd recommend Gabrielle Valenti at 330 S. Brea Blvd. in Brea. I got something like seven or eight consultations before getting my braces, and she easily impressed me over all the others.

She examined my bite much more thoroughly than the other doctors I had a consultation with. But I think the best thing about her is that she doesn't have any assistants; she does ALL the work herself, from the grunt work like impressions to installing the braces.

Unlike other places I visited, she schedules plenty of time between patients, so we're never rushed if unexpected issues with the hardware crop up. She also has a simple, but very clean office. She doesn't feel the need to impress patients with a fancy website (she doesn't have one that I know of) or with a laser light show in the waiting room.

Good luck with your search!
