New Here

#1 Post by alh1303 »

Hi everyone. I'm a 27 year old woman in Scotland, and this is my first time having braces. I have the standard metal brackets with molar bands on my second to last molars on the top (both sides), and back two molars on the bottom (both sides).

I do have a question - My archwire has broken three times between the bottom right molar bands, because my tooth sits on the wire. Is there any other option for me besides visiting my orthodontist every week? It's expensive and takes all day to get to the office.

Welcome! I love Scotland - spent a lot of time there as a student and did my final mapping project on Iona.

I think if you break an archwire you have no choice but to go back to the orthodontist. Perhaps you can ask if there is anything he/she can do to stop this from happening?

Hey,

This happened to me a lot so they put a 'stopper' on one side of my mouth. Not sure what the technical term is. Just ment that my teeth wouldn't close down as far and thus didn't knock the wire.
Bit of a pain having to get used to only one tooth meeting in your mouth but it did stop the brace braking. I had that on for about a year.

Thanks everyone. I've made an appointment and will ask about a stopper at my visit.

Maybe you mean molar buildups? They could also put bite turbos. Both of these stop you from biting off your brackets but they can take a bit of time to get used to.

I have two buildups. They are the worst! Gack, I hate the feel of those. They didn't even tell me what they were doing and why. It's like I was a total anesthesia zombie in that chair. Grrrrrrrrr.

I also have them (molar builups, or do you call them molar pads/ elevators?). Anyway, they are indeed very annoying! My open bite has worsened because of them and I can only chew on my back molars now, which makes eating quite difficult. I hope to get a bit used to them soon.....
