Painful mouth ulcers.....help!!

#1 Post by braceykay87 »

Im 4 days into life with six month smile braces and yesterday I started getting extremely painful mouth ulcers. They're inside my mouth and lips and on my tongue. My cheeks are so swollen and im in so much pain that I've taken today off work. Its painful to eat and speak, I just want to rip the braces off my teeth!

Does anyone have any tips or remedies on dealing with mouth ulcers? Please reassure me that this wont last for the whole six months??!

Have you tried salt water rinses? I always found these helped a bit. Also, apply lots of wax anywhere you have something rubbing. If that doesn't work, specially if the wax won't stay on, try putting some cotton between you cheek and the bracket. Take some painkillers too if you need them.

I find the rubbing lasts about a week and then gradually gets better but when a tooth moves, and the bracket is in a new place, I get some minor rubbing again.

I hope you feel better soon.

get used to it...they suck...I honesly rinse with good ol' listerine when I have them...it seems to work pretty well. I have 2 at them moment that are almost healed..but yes they do suck big time with braces...

I recommend applying wax anywhere you think may be rubbing; you may want to apply Mack's ear plugs instead of the wax, as it is more lasting (you can tear off bits) which I keep in reserve for a really bad day. So far the wax has helped. If you use salt water rinses, the usual recommendation about 1 tsp in 8 oz warm water and repeat every few hours. But probably the most important thing is to reduce the rubbing with wax and let nature take its course. Best of luck to you. I hate mouth pain.

Like everyone has said, sadly it's pretty normal. I've had some shockers, particularly at the start. At times no matter what I do, wax just won't stick. As Ciara said, the cotton works well in this case. Just buy some sterile cotton bandage/gauze stuff from the chemist.

I also have something called Kenalog I get from the chemist. It's a cream you put on just at bedtime and it helps to heal up any really bad one's while you sleep. It's kind of gritty and gross, but it works. During the day some bonjella can help numb the area while you have the wax or cotton in there.

Thanks for the tips! The salt water rinses have helped a bit, the pain is slightly better today than the last 2 days so hoping they are slowly beginning to clear!

In answer to my own question and if any others are wondering......

My ulcers have now cleared up, I'd say days 3-6 from getting braces were the absolute worse, salt water rinses, wax and 'medijel' gel helped the most. Now Im on day 11 and hardly any pain :) Obviously everyone is different though and Im sure there is more pain to come once my teeth start moving!

Glad to hear this. Yes, as teeth move and a bracket ends up in a new position, you can get them again. I keep getting a nasty one on the inside of my lower lip from it being "pinched" between the brackets on my lower incisors.

I use Colgate Peroxyl Mouth Sore Rinse and apply dental wax. My mouth and teeth love it.

I'm 33 days in and still using wax.. (Mostly because of my coil...and the wires at the back of my mouth.)
I also use Peroxyl.

I'm 6 weeks in and still have spots that require wax all the time. It's the only thing that helps me.
