buildups and bite ?

#1 Post by Cisne »

Hi! Just got my braces last week. I have buildups so that I don't bite off bottom brackets. My buildups are not on molars but closer to the front. Am I the only one to have them there? Also, has anyone found that they have shifted their bite (without meaning to) because of these. Somehow I'm biting in front of them and not where I would normally bite. Does that make sense at all?
Thanks :)

I used to have them and most of them wore off now. I hated them. I used to think this orthodontic treatment would be so much easier if the ortho hadn't put them on, because I had to relearn how to chew food. But as everything in this process, I got used to them and wasn't bothered so much. Maybe other things began to bother me more, such as poking wires, chewing my own cheeks, toothache, etc.

Are you talking about cushions so that you don't crack your top teeth by hitting the ceramic brackets on the bottom? If so, I have those. And, yes, they really disrupted my bite and it took me a good month to get used to them. I still find that all of a sudden I realize I've been biting on them (almost like grinding your teeth) just because I'm still not completely accustomed to them. If you are talking about the cusions, also I recommend asking your ortho for some extras. While my brackets and ligs stain a very small bit, the cushions stain a LOT. They get grody within a week. Since I could easily change them myself or add one if I needed it becaue of a bite change, she gave me a little envelope of extras so I could change them between appointments.

Kathy,
These are like tooth colored globs of glue that were place so that I didn't bite off brackets. They are hard and very much attached to the biting surface of those teeth. I just realized that I have been somehow biting in front of them so that my front teeth meet. However, that also means that my front top teeth are very close to my bottom brackets. Hate to bother my ortho.
Thanks,
Michele

I have the build-up on my molars. I've had them for three weeks and I definitely change My bite so I can chew, or at least naw on something. My front teeth don't touch, even if I try to, the build ups are too high so I can't. I've noticed my teeth shifting so more of my back teeth are touching and I think I'll need to go back to get them replaced in a different spot. You'll get used to them. And at least they're tooth colored, mine are blue!

Yes! I just got my bottom brackets on last week, and almost bit into one of my bottom brackets when they were done....so they had to put the buildups on my second to last molars. Not fun. I'm already used to them, but I hate the fact that I have an open bite. I'm wearing elastics 24/7 as well, so the open bite isn't as bad when they were first put on, but I guess it's necessary to achieve the best results. I have had to adjust my eating habits since the buildups were put on, just liquids and soft foods, it just feels weird to chew some foods, cause it's not even like a normal tooth. I hope they come off at my next appointment.....but I won't hold my breath.

I had these and they were awful. They were taken off at my first adjustment.

Mine are dark blue! I've had them from day one, and they just lowered them a little on Monday. My bite really changed with these. Right my jaw is really out of alignment. After about a week though, they do become more comfortable and you dont notice them as much as time goes on.

Mine was blue, too. My ortho never took them off. They were naturally worn off on their own. But it sounds like a lot of you had your ortho scrap them off.
