Curve of Spee (lower arch curving upwards at front)

#1 Post by Timetoshine »

Hello!

I have just found out what is happening to my lower arch - thanks to this forum!

I have developed a Curve of Spee over the first six months of my treatment. I was braced in April, and noticed the upward curve in my lower arch at the front at about 2 months in. I did not have it when I started treatment.

Does anyone have experience with, or have had this happen to them?

Would be great to hear what your ortho did to correct, and when during your treatment. My understanding is that some people have the Curve of Spee before treatment starts.

Thanks!

Here are some photos of my teeth recently. Note the lower arch wire path, then you can clearly see the arching up of the wire.

(Tried to post these before but they didn't show- apologies if I am reposting!!)

I also have this and I think my ortho will fix it with elastics.

Cool thanks for message. If you remember, can you let me know what your ortho does? I'm interested to know!
Thanks :)

I have already had box elastics (from my upper molars to my upper canine to my lower canine to my lower molars) for 2 months, and this helped a lot, also to fix my lateral open bite . Now I am in crossbite elastics.
I will surely let you know what my ortho will be doing next!

Good luck with your treatment!

I have started to get a more exaggerated Curve of Spee as my teeth have started to move as well. It is my understanding that everyone has one, it is just how deep it is that makes a difference. Mine is a deep one- or not optimal. My ortho said that it can be corrected a couple of different ways: with a "Recursive wire" or in my case- the regular wire, and elastics. Apparently the recursive wire is only used in extreme conditions, and thank goodness mine is not. :) I don't need more problems with my deep bite then I already have.
HTH :)

Hey Timetoshine! I started off with that problem and it worsened at the beginning of treatment. I had a reverse curve wire placed about 6 months into treatment and now at 10 months, my lower teeth are all level. It took a month I think after the wire change to correct problem. It hurt like hell though! I think I'm going to need the same kind of wire on top too. The box elastics are not bringing my teeth all the way down on the sides. I have an adjustment on Nov 6th. I'll post pics soon. I haven't been real active on here lately as my Daddy just passed away on Sept 27th. I was a total Daddy's Girl and his passing has devastated me. Could care less about the braces at this point but I know he would want me to see it through. He was the only person who was really interested in my treatment :( anyway sorry this post got off subject. But I will definitely post pics to help with your encouragement!

Bikerchick....very sorry for your loss. No reason for you to apologize for anything. It is not an easy part of life for anyone.
I have never heard of this curve. But I have it too!! Thanks for enlightening me on this!

Ooo so sorry to hear of your loss Bikerchick - remember the good times, and share with those you love. I lost my father many years ago, and as Daddys girl also I know the hurt.

Curve of Spee, oh, Curve of Spee!!

Sounds like a positive outcome from all of your accounts... bumping this post to the top to see if anyone else has experiences with this happening and how treatment went :)

I am interested to know what a 'severe' curve looks like, and a 'less severe'... any pics?

That is just how my teeth have stated out. Not raised in the front much, and now very raised. It is encouraging to see the pictures of before, during and now. There is hope! I don't always want my teeth to be like this. It is discouraging.

Can only wait and hope I guess, no use me stressing about it!!
