I have had a RPE for two months. I turn the key each night, take some Motrin, and go to bed. Typically by the morning the discomfort has passed. For the past week I have had more pain the usual after turning my RPE's key. The RPE was digging into the roof of my mouth and causing right ear pain after each turn.

I saw my ortho yesterday who noticed the entire RPE somehow became un-cemented from my teeth! He took off the RPE (it was nice to have 5 mins without that thing in), cleaned it off, filed down the part of the RPE that was hurting my mouth, and then re cemented it back in. Throughout the rest of the day I began to feel better and the pain in my ear all but went away.

I turned the key last night (like I normally do) and Oh! The pain!!! My right ear and sinus under my right eye have so much pressure in them! I took 1200 mg of Motrin and it didn't touch the pain! I slept with an ice pack last night. This morning the pain started up again as soon as I woke. This is torture. I want to rip this thing out of my mouth and call it quits! I would rather go through child birth again than to deal with this for the next 7 months!

I am so irritable! I cannot concentrate to work at my job or care for my baby! It's too early to call the ortho just yet but I am hoping today isn't their Friday off. Owie!!!!!

Anyone else ever have similar experience?

Pisces, I have not had a similar experience, but when I hear a woman say they would rather endure childbirth than put up with (fill in the blank), I know that (fill in the blank) must be very, very bad. Wishing you the best of luck. This does not sound normal in any way to me. Perhaps the ortho is being too aggressive.

I know how you feel .The pain can be unbearable at times . I have had two RPE appliances and now the ortho wants to put in a third one because the other two didn't work.Ive grown tired of the constant applying and removal of the appliance. That's just as painful. I have had the thing off for two months and it's the best feeling.

My ortho saw me first thing this morning and was so caring. The upper right band became uncemented again in the back of my mouth causing that part of the appliance to slide up my tooth. Once he lowered the band the pain started to go away! He re-cemented it back in place making sure it was lower on the tooth where it should be. He also made sure the cement was set and triple checked it before letting me leave. He said that because my bite is shifting (I have upper as well as a lower expander) that my bottom molar was pushing on the band of the upper expander making it slide up. He apologized that it wasn't fixed correctly yesterday adding that he should have taken a closer look at my bite. He said to call if any more problems come up and if the office is closed to leave him a voice mail as he checks it regularly (not just during office hours). It's experiences like today that remind me why I choose him.

More good news, he was very pleased to see things improving that I will probably have the expander for only 3 more months (vs. 7 more as we originally discussed)!
