So I'm thinking of finally getting braces at 20 years old. Problem is, my school is a pretty long drive(6-7 hours) from home. Anyone else here go to school far from home and if so, how do they deal with the monthly appointments?

I would go to an ortho closest to where you are the majority of the time?

Hmmm... if you are going to get braces at all, I agree that you should go with one near your school. Summers are going to slow down your treatment time unless you don't mind the 12-14 hr round trip to get adjustments.

And how far along in school are you? It's really expensive to switch orthodontists if you graduate and get a job out of town while you are still in braces.

My college days are long past but I agree with sirwired. Plus, you have to expect the unexpected and unplanned trips required by a bracket coming off at inopportune times or other more serious issues.

I'm halfway done with school at the moment. I would find an ortho close to school but the problem is that my dad's dental insurance only covers for dentists in the NYC area.

In the beginning, my adjustments were every 6 to 8 weeks. Then around the 6 month mark, they went to 8 or 12 weeks apart. So, the travel time is something to definitely take into consideration.

Also, have you been to any consultations? I think depending on your case and treatment plan, it will be easier to make a decision once you have all the details.

You're right, I'll have to meet with the ortho and see what he says. Thanks everyone for the help
