1st tightening problems

#1 Post by LadyBraceFace »

Hi. Im a newbie to this forum and to braces. I had my 1st tightening yesterday and so far I am miserable. They had placed the back brackets in and changed both top and bottom wires and had placed power chains from the middle (top & lower) right side all the way to the back. My back gum line and cheeks are sore as hell. Im back to eating soups and mashed potatoes and i had this constant headache. On top of all that, i keep waking up in the middle of the night because my jaw keeps on snapping and hurting my teeth. Orajel and ibuprofen worked for a few hours only.

My major concern actually is when my ortho placed a false tooth in to the gap where my tooth had been extracted (because I bottom teeth are too crowded) I noticed I had developed a lisp. I asked my ortho if thats gona go away eventually, he looked baffled and said "I hope so!" Did anyone else have a similar situation?

Btw I had my braces put in November 2013. Supposedly in this for about 1.5 yrs. Im 28 and I love to snowboard. I didnt really have any problems when I first got them braces on except for the not being able to eat whatever I want. I had my last wisdom tooth, 1 upper right tooth and 1 lower front tooth extracted about the 4th day after i got my braces.

I had a lisp when I first got braced, yes, it went away.

Also, my adjustments hurt or don't hurt at random. Some hurt like hell for 2-3 days afterwards, some don't hurt until like a week after I've been to the ortho...etc.

It's a journey for sure!

My first adjustment was a breeze; no pain at all. It won't always be like that, I know. At my next adjustment, I'll be getting my bottom braces on. I expect I'll be sore for about a week like when I got the top braces.

I also have a lisp. It appears that it's here to stay for a while. However, I've been told it's cute. :)

I also had a lisp when I first got braces and it disappear after about 1-2 weeks. The pain does get better as you go through the journey, all the best.

Count me in on the lisp too. I seem to get it back for a couple days after and adjustment of if I've been talking a lot and get tired. I've found that signing my butt off in the car after an adjustment helps a lot.

As I am reading your post i was thinking I could have wrote this myself. I had my first adjustment yesterday. Oh brother! My mouth is aching. Also my problem is my teeth are no longer aligned...one of my upper teeth is being pushed up because the tooth below it no longer matches and its causing me painful problems. But....what can be done....apparently my upper teeth are moving a lot faster than my lower teeth.
The new wires are thicker and tighter. And hurts. Back to eating soft foods for me too. And I keep snapping my teeth at night too. I hate that. No sure if anything can be done for it. I hate this lisp....sometimes people cannot understand me and I have to repeat myself, I am hoping it goes away eventually.....I was thinking it was the temporary tooth too.

Oh well, I know it will be all worth it. Hang in there.....you are not alone.

I remember my first two adjustments being very painful. Removing and reapplying the ligatures was torture. However, once my teeth started to level out, the pain went down quite a bit. Now a days it just hurts a couple days after adjustments. I think that once you get a few more weeks in you will see that the constant pain will subside.

My first adjustment was hell. I couldn't eat for about 3 days. The constant throbbing top and bottom was awful. Second adjustment, got a molar band on the lower right and a new wire on the bottom, new ligs only on top. That was when one tooth literally "popped" into position. Third adjustment, no big deal. Not feeling terribly warm and fuzzy for my 4th adjustment...they had to reschedule my appointment for a longer appointment time. That's February 17th....so we'll see what kind of torture they have in store for me then.
Braces off on 8/26/14 after a year!
