Tooth sounds like it's cracking?

#1 Post by asylumgreen »

I got braces a week ago, and everything seemed to be fine until yesterday. On one side, the furthest back tooth that has a bracket (my back teeth didn't get any and my wisdom teeth have been removed, so I'm talking about what would normally be the third to last tooth) feels like it's cracking. Throughout the day I will hear a cracking sound coming from it, especially if I push my tongue against it or clench my teeth together. At first I thought it was just the tooth moving, but I'm not sure - none of my other teeth have this issue? Years ago this tooth had a pretty significant filling, so I'm worried that the tooth being pulled in one direction is too much for the (composite) filling to withstand or something. However, I thought I'd ask people who have had braces for longer before I bother the orthodontist! Maybe it's normal. Has anyone experienced this?

"Clicking" caused by tooth movement is 100% normal during orthodontics. It's caused by the attaching ligament stretching, which is a side-effect of orthodontics. It will occur and go away at random. The tooth is probably bumping up against another tooth. In my case, the last wiggly tooth didn't go away until I was in retainers for a couple months.

If the tooth was cracked, you'd probably feel it, as they usually hurt. A lot. Either that or the tooth likely would split in two, which you'd also notice.

I've definitely experienced the crackling many times! Very normal!
