I was going in every 4 - 6 weeks to get new wires put in (new thickness i suppose) -- my last visit, I got my "final wires" put in... is there any need to go into the ortho anymore? Will they keep replacing/refreshing this wire with a new "final wire"?

The final wire does not mean final position. They still can add bends, twists, attachments, elastics, whatever they want to you.

Depending on your teeth, you could be in your "final wire" for the majority of your treatment, or you could be in it just a couple of months before debanding. You'll have to ask your ortho.
Assuming you don't have a de-banding date, then expect to see your ortho on roughly the same schedule you've had before.

I've been in my "final wire" for about 8 months now. Little tweaks and adjustments along the way - and unfortunately, lots of rubber bands.

In addition, they will want to replace any powerchains that you have as they become "fatigued" over time. If you wear powerchains you know the feeling when new ones are installed. As I enter the final phase the ortho is stepping up the frequency of visits to every 4 weeks vs. every 6 weeks for past 20 months.

I hit my last set of wires about two months ago but my ortho is talking about debanding so what it means is that you're not gonna go up another thickness and that he's gonna start working on individual areas. After I went back after the last wire appointment, I started on rubberbands. During my adjustment today, he bent my wire a little near my front teeth gap and I'm still in rubberbands. Next appointment I get a deband date if everything looks good. So you're probably getting close! Hang in there!

I wore my 'final wire' on my uppers for 12 months. I still went for visits every 4 weeks throughout. Some visits, I had some treatment changes, others I didn't. Mostly, I had tons of elastics modifications and power chains during the last part of treatment.
I think my favorite part of my visits throughout my entire treatment was when they removed the wires and I was allowed to floss without them in. Despite religious flossing daily with the braces, I always felt better with the unimpeded session of flossing. Not sure if others agree, but it made the visits worth it for me. I even had a 45 minute travel time each way too.
