Treatment plan question...

#1 Post by Katzchen »

I went in for my treatment plan appointment today and am set to get my braces on Monday. The ortho told me that on Monday I will have brackets placed on all but my four premolars, but they will not put the wire on yet. Then I will schedule with my dentist to have the four premolars pulled. About two weeks after the premolars are taken out I will go back and have the wire put on.

Has anyone else had brackets for a period of time before have the wire put on? I can't figure out why they wouldn't just put the brackets and the wire on the same day after the extraction have occurred. ( I did ask my ortho, his answer was that it would be faster this way :? )

Not sure to be honest but mine put my top brace on with a very slim wire before i even had my extractions done! Made for an interesting extraction!

I think they all have differing ways of doing things, but they are the professionals. That said if your not sure, keep asking. Your teeth - your money!

I think it's probably to try and spread the discomfort for you a bit.
You'll take a little while to get accustomed to the friction of the brackets against the soft tissues in your mouth, which is a different kind of discomfort than when they put the wires on and teeth start moving. They're probably trying to spare you having to go through both at the same time!

(Although, frankly, if I'm going to be in pain I'd rather be in worse pain for less time than have it split in to two!)

The speed thing is a bit weird though. Maybe it does mean both your appointments will be a bit shorter, but I'm not sure that fitting wires takes very much time at all anyway...
