Should I ask for extractions?

#1 Post by ebboe »

I have had braces for 2 years already but my bite has changed for the worse since I have gotten my braces. My teeth flare out so much now on the top and bottom and my orthodontist does not talk to me during my treatments. Do you think I should ask for extractions to fix my bite? There is no room for elastics to work.

Here's a pic:

They look better in those pictures than they do in real life.

Orthodontics is about the face, so you won't be able to get proper guidance on whether extractions are a good idea with just tooth pictures (I will say they frequently aren't a good idea though). You don't want to produce drastic facial decline simply to correct the bite (i.e. if the etiology is a small lower jaw you are essentially asking for your doctor to treat to the pathology). Additionally, just because teeth are remove doesn't mean the bite will be fixed; good compliance and a favorable biologic response is needed to guide you to that end.

I would politely ask to set up a conference to discuss your progress with your treating orthodontist. They may want to take pictures and models to have this discussion. There are things your doctor may be able to do to help guide you to a result that you'll be happier with.

Don't get extractions. From your pics your teeth are far back enough already. Talk to your ortho about why there is so much flaring and hopefully he or she can do something. I had extractions and they worked out great so I am definitely not against them but in your case I wouldn't have teeth out.

I totally understand your concern as I have worries about the direction my teeth are seeming to go but really I have heard that surgery for the lower jaw is the only real solution and that to me isn't one. Hope you get answers that you become comfortable with. (By the way, it's nice to have an Ortho in the forums!)
