I had my braces removed in September but then had them reinstalled that same month on the molars for purposes of wearing elastics to close my posterior open bite.
Long story short, 3 months after the braces were reinstalled, I had them removed in early December. However, now my molars are AGAIN not touching after less than 3 weeks since second removal. Is this a situation where this is the best result I'll get? I tried calling my ortho but he is not returning my call: probably because after two years, he is sick of hearing from me.
Can I expect some degree of settling? I have Hawley retainers so the teeth have contact so that isn't an issue.I'm about ready to give up on having a good bite because I refuse to get braces a third time and this time I would probably have to pay for it.
So depressed that after surgery and braces my bite still isn't good.

Has anyone not experienced relapse like this?
Re: Molars not touching again after second braces removal
I'm far from having my braces off so I don't have any advice for you but I hope that your teeth settle into a better bite pattern. I've read that settling is expected and considered part of the treatment process, but I dont know how much is normal or can be expected. Hopefully your ortho gets back to you soon!

Re: Molars not touching again after second braces removal
I have no idea what to say. I just had had by braces removed on the 17th, and my molars are not touching either! Actually, only my 8 incisors touch when I close my mouth. I use an essix at night. I don't know if that's part of my problem.. I go back for a check-up in Feb. I don't know if I should call before then, or just wait until my appointment and see if things get better/settle by then. So far it seems like everything's "settling" horribly! My bite seems worse every day. I think it's the worst right when I take my retainer out in the morning.
Anyway, sorry this is happening to you! Wish I had some advice/wisdom to share.

I'm sorry you're having the same problem. I wear my lower Hawley retainer full time and the upper about 10-12 hours per day, so I don't think part time wear for you is the problem. The more I read about this, the more common it seems for the molars not to touch after removal.Ambrosia80 wrote:I have no idea what to say. My ortho's office finally got back to me, and my ortho advised that I wait until my next retainer appointment, January 19th: at no point did he suggest that this is a settling issue.
On January 15th, I'll finally be getting the 8 crowns I've been needing - I just won my appeal against my insurance company, and just in time, too, because on Friday, a portion of one of my front teeth (one of the teeth that needs the crown) broke off! I just hope that the crowns will not adversely affect my bite even more. In any event, I'm more than likely going to need a new upper retainer after the crowns are put in.
