Fixing 'opposite' of gummy smile with braces?

#1 Post by alvinrow »

I have the opposite problem of a gummy smile - as in when I smile you can just barely see the bottoms of my upper teeth. I'm considering getting braces to fix gaps in my teeth, but on the fence because I don't want to spend a ton for something that won't even be that noticeable since my teeth don't show.

So I was wondering if anyone here has had braces or any other orthodontic treatment which resulted in them having a 'bigger' smile with more of their teeth showing?

Thanks!

I heard one ortho who I had a consult with call it 'insufficient incisal display'...I had this, and braces can definitely bring your teeth down, just ask any ortho you visit if this is able to be done by him/her. A different ortho I went to didn't mention this and I had to bring it up.

Tell the ortho your main concern (your hidden smile) when you go for a consult. A good ortho can describe how their treatment plan will address your concerns. It's not out of line to simply state you don't want treatment if they can't fix your main complaint.

I imagine your particular problem can be fixed in some cases, not fixed in others, and a quality orthodontist can tell you what kind you have.
