Carriere' off and braces added tomorrow BUT….

#1 Post by KayKay »

After 4 months of a carriere' with elastics and lingual arch, the teeth on the one side definitely moved to make room for braces and the "de-twisting" of a front tooth.

However, I'm very concerned about my bite. My bite was only "off" slightly when I started this process. Now, my bite is horrible.

To bite down with my front teeth, the top teeth no longer line up with the bottom. And they don't touch because the teeth on my left side hit first. (the bicuspids and premolars), keeping my front teeth from doing their work. Add to that, when I bite on the left - the right doesn't even come close to matching much less touching each other. (Yet I eat on the right because the left has almost too much contact from all the teeth touching.)

Tomorrow morning the carriere' comes off and the braces go on. I'm worried the carriere' has moved things too much.

Is this typical that things will get much worse before the orthodontist puts things back? I would hate to regret this decision….which is where i'm currently leaning.
Looking forward to the new smile,
KayKay

Usually things get worse before they get better.
I know I was concerned on my left side bite after having palatal expansion, as I thought my ortho may have expanded too much, but now my bite's gotten better than it was.

Braces can do pretty amazing things. :) try not to worry too much yet. Good luck getting your braces on! :)

Agreed with the "worse before better" statement. My Carriere distalizers did what they needed to do, but there were definitely some negative side effects including all the stuff that you mentioned. I felt the same as you did, wondering if my ortho really knew what he was doing. It's frustrating, but once those braces go on you will probably be amazed at how quickly things even back out. Even with Invisalign my teeth were able to bite properly very soon after I started. Congrats on finishing this phase of treatment!

Thanks. I am so sore today. The CD is off - and getting it off was a trauma. That tooth is now SO sore and then they put brackets on it - of course - and tied them up with wire. That canine tooth is distended or whatever the vocabulary is to describe "longer" because its been pulled with the elastics for the past 4 months. He told me that will go back to its normal spot now that the pressure is off.

The brackets are quite irritating to me. I should have been nicer to my kids when they had braces. :-*
