Impacted canine - what's your experience

I'm a 30 year old male who is on his way to getting invisalign treatment. However, before I can get started with the invisalign treatment I have to bring my impacted mandibular (lower) canine up. I still have my baby canine. The mandibular canine's top is in front of my lateral and central incisor root based on the X-ray and too close to the roots so my choice was to either bring it up or have it extracted. I opted for the former option.
Now I have an fixed appliance in my mouth which is attached to the impacted canine (exposed via surgery from the labial side/front of the gums) via a bracket and band. The orthodontist said it would take around 6 months to bring it up. As per her my impacted canine is at the right place (start of the root) below the baby canine but instead of being directed upwards it was directed towards central lower incisor (like at 45 degrees) and that's why it never came up.
Was wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem and what their experience was in terms of how long it took to bring a mandibular canine up. Please do mention your age at the time you got this procedure done as I know that makes a huge difference.
