Regrets and cavities

#1 Post by Felina Grimm »

4 months into treatment and I already regret getting braces. My teeth haven't progressed much and my ortho said I have stubborn teeth, to today I got thicker wires put on and some metal ties on some of my teeth. On the teeth that did manage to move, I discovered some black spots on my front teeth in areas previously hidden by the crowding. So now I have to go to the dentist to get those checked as my ortho suspects they are hidden cavities that are now visible. I could have prevented this by getting treatment as a kid to releive the crowding. I feel that it's already too late especially after being told that my teeth haven't moved as much. I almost feel like stopping treatment. Sorry for the rant. :-/

I'm sorry to hear that. My teeth have always been a piece of work. The way I see it, once my teeth are straight and my brackets are gone, it will be so much easier to care for them, and they will be healthier as a result. I hope you can stick to your treatment. I think it will be worth it in the end.

My front teeth finally budged some more and now I see another black spot. I regret not fixing this issue as a kid and kicking myself for it. I hope I don't need to get crowns because brackets don't stay put as well. I should have gotten dentures. They're cheaper.

I have 1 crown and yes, the bracket did pop off twice in just over 2 years but treatment worked and that tooth did move the same as all the others. When one of my teeth rotated into position, there was a small black spot that did turn out to be a cavity. I got a metal filling put in and hope to get it replaced with a ceramic filling soon. It took quite a while for some of my teeth to move too but they all did in the end. Hang in there and you will see progress.
Oh, I got my braces off 2 weeks ago. The result is not perfect (I would have needed implants to replace a congenitally missing upper incisor and lower premolar) but I am happy with it and I no longer get severe headaches from clenching trying to find a comfortable bite. Good luck!

Hang in there. I too noted slow progress due to my high bone density (as my ortho enjoys pointing out, I have a thick skull). Although it's annoying to now find cavities, be grateful that they are being exposed so that they can be corrected. Of course what's past is past. No one is perfect. Keep looking forward. I'm about 4 months past my initial completion target of two years, and I can't wait to get these things off.

I will have my exam this Thursday. I hope I don't need crowns. I can't afford to spend any more money for broken brackets. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. And I'm also concerned about getting fillings because I was planning on whitening my teeth when treatment was over as they're staining as a faster rate than normal and I hear it's not recommended to whiten your teeth if you have tooth colored fillings. Some of my teeth are almost solid yellow. This sucks.

I wanted to see if you went for your exam and if the black spots turned out to be cavities. I have noticed a black spot on my front tooth now that my teeth have moved. I can't tell if my black spot is on my tooth or my gum. It looks more like a graysh black spot. Anyway I was just curious :)

Wow! I forgot about giving an update!

It turned out I only had one cavity and got it filled the same day. The rest were black stains from years of inadequate brushing due to the crowding. And my teeth finally budged with the thicker wires.

Awesome! I like you have very crowded teeth and it took a long time for me to get to the dentist. Now I am seeing all the thing I should have done back then lol. Thank you for the update. I freaked when I say the greysh black spot on my tooth and instantly thought of your post. Helped alot :)

I used a whitening toothpaste and a whitening mouth wash throughout my treatment. Ortho and dentist said it was fine. My teeth looked white during my treatment and I didn't have to whiten them after my braces came off. There were no spots left where the brackets had been. It caused no problems.
