Any success with myofunctional therapy?

Hi there,

Has anyone tried this and if so has it been successful? I began reading up on this about 2 months ago and could identify straight away with being a mouth breather all my life. I have been very consciously trying to correct my tongue position and swallow ever since and researched a dentist who provided this service in my area hoping that this alone could help correct my bite and asymmetry in my jaw and lips. He has suggested appliances need to be fitted first to expand the upper palate and widen my arches then braces on the lower jaw to correct some crowding and braces on upper jaw also as myofunc therapy would not be sufficient.

I just wondered if anyone is practising myofunctional therapy while wearing braces or after? Or even just myofunctional therapy alone without braces? It appears to be very successful in developing children but there doesn't appear to be too much evidence of it working for adults..

Is it legit? Has anyone noticed improvements?

Interested to hear from anyone with experience of it..

Thanks a mill

If your palate isn't wide enough, it's not wide enough. You cannot "train" yourself to breathe through your nose. For me, it took a combination of both orthognathic and nasal surgery to open me up for nose breathing. You may want to consult with an ENT in addition to the ortho.

Thanks sirwired,

Some people on the site appear to have had success with expansion but I suppose it's a very individual thing. I have loads more questions to ask my ortho now after finding so many posts from people with different experiences...it's been a revelation!

Anyone else out there using myofunctional therapy?

Thanks :D

Oh, I'm not saying expansion isn't an option... it just wasn't for me.
