I'm 36 and need braces to make space for my canine to come into place, luckily it has come down but is waayy back in my mouth and I still have the baby canine in place. I opted for regular metal braces because my students told me clear braces show food easily. Braces aren't bad but I just got a bite plate to keep me from biting off bottom brackets due to a significant overbite. This is only day 4 with bottom brackets and bite plate so I know I need to be patient but I don't know how I will get used to this bite plate! There is basically no joy in eating, it's a chore. Food has lost flavor because my tongue hits the stupid bite plate. Does it get better? Of course I also have a horrible lisp. I'm very thankful it's summertime because I teach middle school and my students would not be able to understand me.

Any helpful advice from bite plate wearers? Please tell me pretty soon I won't even notice it.

Don't have a bite plate, but got molar buildup bite turbos which is similar. Chose all metal too for the same reason. For the first week my tongue was so torn up I couldn't taste anything, and eating was strange since you can't bite down all the way. After that it returned to normal and could enjoy food and taste again. Hang in there, it might take a week or two. On the bright side at least you'll have something in common to talk about with your students.
