has anyone experienced recessed lower jaw after braces?

#1 Post by Littlemonster »

i used to have a normal bite and i had a jawline, but my teeth were crooked so i mom took me to the orthodontist. got on braces for a year, teeth straightened but i start to have a overbite. I also started to notice my face got wider and my chin got shorter. so i went to get my second braces which lasted for almost 1 and a half year. same thing, teeth perfectly straight. bite was not fixed at all, it actually made it worse cause i start to feel pain around my temples. later i found out it's called tmj. when i chew with the right side of my teeth, my left side teeth would not meet, same if i chew on my left side, my right side teeth would not meet, theres a always a gap. whats worse is i noticed my lower jaw went backward and my face got even wider and shorter. so now I'm left with a recessed chin and a wild face with huge cheekbones. I'm so devasted and my self esteem went all the way down. I thought about going to another orthodontist but since my two previous braces experience were so horrible I'm so scared it'll make my situation even worse. I don't know what to do, has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Hey littlemonster, if I were you I would definitely go visit a few different orthodontists and get their opinions about your situation. It can be hard to predict how braces are going to affect the facial development of a growing adolescent, but it sounds like you have some real problems that may need to be addressed now that you are done growing. If you talk to several orthos, I hope you will be able to find one who is sensitive to your concerns and gives you confidence that he or she can address them appropriately.
