I have a 12mm overjet and also a deep bite. I have gotten two upper bicuspid extractions.

My orthodontist says that he won't be able to completely correct my overjet, even though I did extract two teeth. He also keeps calling the overjet "overbite," and he hasn't mentioned anything about my actual overbite.

Have any of y'all had success with treating extreme overjets without surgery?

completely dependent if it is skeletal or dental overbite. In many cases if it is dental can be fixed with extractions and orthodontic work...but if skeletal unfortunately most likely surgery is only way to fix it. I would trust the judgement of orthodontist and oral surgeon

I have a 10 mm overjet and my orthodontist believes he can reduce that to 4 mm (which, he tells me, is the upper end of "normal", normal being 2 mm to 4 mm) without surgery.

However, the amount of correction that can take place without surgery I would expect depends on what is causing the overjet. In my case, to get down to 1 - 2 mm, I would probably need surgery (or should have had a brace as a child), which my orthodontist advised against on the grounds that there was no clinical need.

For me, a lot of this is about setting expectations. I am never going to have perfect aesthetics, and I am okay with that. I am looking for a significant improvement though in both my bite and the look of my teeth.

What is your goal and what are your expectations?
