Pregnancy and Braces... and will these things ever come off?!?

#1 Post by IamKrysie »

Hello friends,

It has been a long time since I have posted. Its good to be back.
I just passed the 24 month mark with my braces. I just got elastics (quail? or some bird on the package.) and I am really ready to be done with this process. I think I have about 6 months left in treatment.
This year, not only am I turning 30, but I am hoping to get pregnant. How could pregnancy affect the end of my treatment? Fixing this little bit of an open bite is the last thing on the agenda, so there isn't too much more movement to be made.

Thanks!

I don't think (as an RN) that pregnancy in itself would have much of an impact on your braces. And if it came to it, an anesthesiologist could pass an endotracheal tube should you need general anesthesia for a C-Section. Nutrition of course now becomes even more important, so you might have to figure out creative ways to meet dietary requirements if you are having any issues with eating. Life would probably be a lot simpler with the braces off before you deliver, but that's just an opinion. Best of luck to you!

One thing to consider is it possible get a sports mouthguard to bite down on. If you are trying to push, and biting hard, you could damage your braces, depending on how your teeth hit. I know at that time it will be the least of your worries, but something to check with your ortho about.

Braced throughout pregnancy and had no special changes done. Induction labour for three days and ended with emergency c section and no changes were made because I had braces. Just make sure to look after your teeth during pregnancy as its prone to decay. I waited till my baby was 10 months before I underwent jaw surgery. Good luck!

I heard, but can not verify that in some cases pregency can help with your treatment since some women will experience loose teeth due to horomones.

I was pregnant and didn't know it when mine were put on. Not being able to eat at wire changes was bad but I got through it. He's 3 months old now. Going to appointments with a newborn is challenging. Morning sickness was the worst part.

That's awesome I have had speedy treatment to. My teeth all straightened in about 10 months except one! Maybe being pregnant helped! That's cool information.

Braces shouldn't bother your pregnancy. The only problem there can be is weither you feel a lot of pain during the adjustments because you need to eat propperly while pregnant or at least try to get all the supplies your baby needs.
I've met a few girls who kept on their treatment while pregnant, some others gave up on their treatment, not because there's any complication at all, but because they couldn't afford the monthly costs of the braces and a kid at the same time.

I had braces during my entire pregnancy and the only thing that was an issue was taking ibuprofen. I was told not to take it during pregnancy and it's what worked best to handle pain from adjustments. I just had to take tylenol instead.
Braced 7/30/14, upper and lower ceramics. Treatment time 20-24 months. Treating an open bite.
