Just got my braces yesterday!

#1 Post by alicia220 »

Hi everyone! I am 26 years old and just got my braces yesterday. They hurt so bad now! I am having a hard time getting adjusted. It feels like my teeth are caged and every tooth is sore. I also have been lucky enough to get bumpers on my two upper molars because when I bit down I guess I hit my brackets. My current time with braces is set to be 2 years. I have a slight overbite but my main issue is a large gap between two front teeth and then gaps throughout the bottom as well. My main concern and the concern of my orthodonist is my teeth are very small so they said when they push the spaces together it will look as if my profile is caved in. That scared me because as much as i dislike my gaps i dont want my face to be ruined. He said most likely to correct the issue i will need veneers or bonding. I dont want to go the veneer route simply because they grind and ruin your normal teeth. Can anyone advise when the initial lisp goes away? I work a phone job and i can tell that my s's, c's and f's are really bad currently. In your experience as well how long typically till the bumpers can come off as well? For anyone with gaps, when did you first start to notice them close? Thanks for letting me vent all!

I don't have an answer to you because I have never gotten braces before. I just wanted to ask something because you seem expierienced. So I went to get my teeth cleaned/checked up the other day and my doctor said that I would be a good candidate for braces. I have a slight underbite. I wanted to know if I should get it or not.

if the underbite is only slight and you arent self conscious about your smile i would say pass. if it bothers you then i would say get braces or consider invisalign to correct the bite.

Well Google hasn't really done me any good for pictures of a slight underbite. Do you know any pictures by any chance I just need to compare.

Never mind. I compared my teeth to severe underbite cases and I'm pretty sure mine isn't. All I need is braces but thanks for the feed back. :) Hope someone answers your question and good luck!

Easiest way to get past it is to practice speaking. Talking to yourself looks silly, so sit down with a book and read out loud or sing in the car. The more you speak, the easier it is to adjust to the braces.

Just wanted to pop in and say that we got our braces on at the same time. Friday the 29th. What's your estimated treatment time? Two years?

The "bumpers" (as you call them) are called bite turbos or bite blocks, you should get ready to have to deal with them for a while, i had mine for 8 month before they removed them, and they rebuilt them several times.
Lots of crimes here

1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars

2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29

3. Open bite

4. Upper midline left of center

5. Lower midline right of center

6. Upper and lower teeth not straight

Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.

Braces removed since 11/06/17

Hi there! I just got my braces yesterday too :). I got them on August 2nd. And I have been lucky so far because I haven't felt pain. I have a deep over bite, buck teeth, and crowding. I will post pictures once they let me.

Yep! Two years! We'll see who gets them off first! ;)

I'm doing all right. No pain, really. But the molar build-ups are ridiculous. I've been eating mostly soup, pasta, rice... foods that require very little chewing.

This is my second time being braced though so I kind of knew what to expect. Still sucks, though. I'm an Italian boyo! I like to eat!

The lisping thing...slow your speech down ever so slightly and it will help. I'm naturally a fast talker and I've had to dial that back because it seems like the words all get caught on my brackets as they try and come out. Weird description, but it's true. I had a deep overbite, so they are pulling my top and bottom front teeth away from each other, and now it seems like my molars contact more as I speak and it's kind of interfering. I feel like I'm trying to relearn how to talk so I don't sound so sloshy with some sounds.

Give it time, and slow down a bit.
Braces for 18 months/4 days.

^ That's good advice. The one thing I had forgotten about is the speech thing. I remember the aching teeth, the sores, the difficulty eating, but had forgotten the speaking part of it.

The first call I made post-bracing was to a customer. Just had to let them know we left the delivery on their front porch. It came out all wonky and the customer was like "HUH?"

I said "Let me try that again..." and slowed it down just a tiny bit. Much better...

Yes the molar build ups are awful! I've been on this lovely liquid ish diet or anything soft enough to not have to chew and just swallow lol. It's definitely hard to get used to. It's just so frustrating to eat though as hungry as I may be. I'm fantasizing about going to in n out burger to chomp down on a juicy burger and can't haha. Yes you both are totally right I have had to slow down my talking and it helps with the lisp. I work in a call center and have to talk to clients 8 hours a day so it is definitely a challenge but great practice! I have an interview next week for a different position within my company and I am nervous can't lie mainly about the speech. Hopefully it calms down by then.
