when i was looking for information about braces before i got them i kept reading about all kinds of different appliances and tongue cribs for tongue thrusting, i never thought too much about it at the time but now that i have braces my top canines hit a bracket on the lower teeth and as such my jaw is more open than it used to be. ( normally my lower teeth would completely cover my upper front teeth on the inside ) with this new opening i've noticed that my tongue is almost always sitting right behind my top teeth in that new gap that has been created. i'm not sure if this is normal or if this is tongue thrust. should i be worried that the orthodontist is going to spring a tongue crib on me at a future visit ?

If your tongue isn't pushing the teeth out then you may be safe. But you never know. I think a lot of orthos get a secret thrill by springing things on thier patients.

so far it's not pushing anything out as far as i know. I'm really hoping i'll be able to avoid the tongue crib but i agree with the springing things on you comment which makes it all the more worriesome that one day it will happen without warning.
