I've had braces for a week now. I'll need metal braces on my lowers for 3 months before I move into Invisalign. I always heard that braces hurt your teeth. Honestly the "pain" in my teeth is very mild and doesn't bother me. However, what bothers me is that everytime I moved my mouth the back wire and all the unnecessary spikes on the braces cut into my inner mouth causing bleeding (i don't have bands). This is especially bad when I eat. Wax doesn't work well because it seems to fall out when I eat. When I'm not eating I took some surgical tubing and cut it like a hotdog and it fits over my braces and now I"m fine not eating.
But how do you eat without bleeding each time? I wonder if I could grind off the death spikes on my brackets since I don't have rubber bands.

Re: Braces cutting mouth up
The wire should not be sticking out from beyond the end of the last bracket. If it is, go have it trimmed. It takes seconds. As for the rest, use silicone wax when you're not eating, and know that it takes several weeks for your mouth to toughen up. Do not grind anything off your brackets, you could weaken the structural integrity of them. Your mouth will get used to them over time. Promise.

Re: Braces cutting mouth up
I went in today to have them looked at. I'm 1 week into braces so my mouth is still tender....
1) She said the back wires were protruding a bit but not much. She shaved them down.
2) She had the dr bend the spears on the brackets back a bit.
3) She gave me some temporary epoxy that works like wax but will stay on whileyou eat. She said it will probably fall off when I brush and to reapply. I'll see how it goes.
Interestingly the office said that in decades I was only one of a few that has had problems with the brackets cutting my mouth. Apparently its not typical???

dont mess with your braces, it may cause you to require you to wear them longer for the same result.
