Is this normal and how can I stop it as it takes ages to unclick. I have braces and two teeth missing from the top to fix an overjet. Is lock jaw normal to get with braces??

No it's not normal -- I am assuming this is a new experience after the braces were applied. I'd call the ortho and explain what is going on (and any related pain), and try to get an idea if it is a temporary issue, or if your treatment plan needs to be adjusted, and so forth. Best of luck to you.

Thanks! I'll ask them at my next appointment, It's not far away and the pain isn't unbearable, just really annoying! :)

Locking open or closed? Closed you might be clenching in your sleep...

Locking open. My overbites too large to grind at this point I think? They wanted me to have jaw surgery because I'm 11mm over however I'm too old to go through that pain. It's very strange and it's making it hard for me to want to go to sleep but I will ask my otho when I see him. I've guessed now it's not common

I take magnesium each day and calcium tables and vitamin d to keep my jaw healthy while wearing the braces. When I say too old I'm 31 and would have been more game to do it in my teenage years or early 20s if my mother could have afforded.

FWIW I had double jaw surgery at 40yo. Not that painful. First 2 weeks are pretty bad, but not horrible. Getting my tonsils out at 39 was a lot worse!
Ever had a sleep study for sleep apnea?

Yeah this happened to me, I woke up unable to fully open my jaw and it took 20 minutes of massaging and a short sharp click back into place before it was back to normal. Only happened once about 3 weeks after getting braced. I have jaw issues and my bite has changed a lot since getting them on - I think this lead to me clenching in my sleep. I don't notice pain when waking up anymore so hopefully I have stopped clenching and I won't wake up with a locked jaw again, fingers crossed. I have my first adjustment next week and will bring it up then.
