Is it supposed to hurt this much or is it just me? Got my braces on today.

Hey everyone,

I finally got my brackets placed today after a month of waiting. I had to get 4 TADs in addition to the brackets and my extraction sites aren't really healed yet, so it's possible that this is an abnormal amount of pain. It just hurts so much! The pain started a few hours after I got my lower brackets and TADs on - I got the uppers and 2 TADs done in the morning, went to work for a few hours and was perfectly fine, then I went back and did the lowers and 2 more TADs. It's not so much the actual hardware bothering my mouth (I'm really surprised actually, because I have a LOT of metal in my mouth right now), but an overall soreness, kind of like my mouth is on fire. I had to leave in the middle of class today because it was hurting so badly, and that was after I had taken painkillers. I have a pretty good pain tolerance for the most part, but that was some of the worst pain I ever had. Even spacers didn't hurt for me. Someone please tell me this isn't going to happen at every adjustment!!

Hey

I remember this well being very new to braces myself and first adjustment earlier this week - both necessitated OTC painkillers. I can only take paracetamol and it helped me, I know other users here recommend anti inflammatories. Also wax if anything is rubbing against your gums.

First 24h were the hardest pain-wise, it does get easier! And I have already seen a difference in some of my overcrowded teeth in 2 months which is a great motivation when in pain/recovering from extractions.

Good luck!

Given the TADs and recent extractions, it's no surprise you are having so much pain and I would predict in another few days you will be feeling much better. I'm not sure what you are taking for pain, but ibuprofen often works better than Tylenol or aspirin for dental pain. Hang in there and best of luck to you! It's all downhill from here :gavel: .

I went back to work after getting mine on, and it was a bad idea. I was in so much pain that I was nauseated. All I could do was stare at my computer screen and try not to throw up. Trust me, day one is the worst! It'll get better very quickly!

Thanks everyone for the reassurances. It's been about 24 hours since I got them on now and it's still significantly painful, but it's at a level where I can handle it with Advil and some grit. I know deep down in my heart that things will get better but things are a little miserable right now, seeing as how much I love my food. I guess the one perk is being able to eat all the ice cream I want!

Hope your feeling better by now. It always worries me when I read experiences like yours as I am supposed to be getting braces and extractions soon. Hopefully, with a bit of time and adjustment you will feel back to normal.
