Hello everyone,
I've been looking around at this forum for a couple of months and decided that it was time to actively participate, because I have my first appointment next week (currently in my early 20’s)!
I noticed that quite a lot of you write about the fact that the inside of your lips get hurt a lot (metal rubbing against lips) during the beginning of treatment, because they have not been roughed up yet.
Do you have any tips to prepare your mouth for treatment?
Personally, I was thinking about VERY GENTLY roughing the inside of my lips up (maybe with a fork), so that the skin can grow a little thicker before the start of my braces journey.
For comparison: Being a passionate practitioner of different martial arts, the soles of my feet always got burned/blisters formed during the start of a new training season. Now I always build up a little mileage in barefoot running before the start of a season, so that my feet are prepared after a period of inactivity. I think you understand where I’m going???
This forum is an awesome compilation of knowledge, so I'd love to hear from you!
I’m not a native English speaker, so please forgive any oddities in my writing.
Kind regards!

I don't know if there's anything to prepare for because I had pain for the entire year and a half of my braces being on. I had cuts at the ends of my back mollars. And in front of my lower incisors. The ortho will usually give you some wax when you get your braces on and you can roll it up in a ball and press it on the sharp bracket.

Get a metal scourer and scratch all your mouth.
^im joking.
People have rough calluses on their feet, the mouth will never get rough calluses. I'm finding it hard to explain why you shouldn't poke your mouth with a fork, just don't do it.
The bracket can rub on the mouth and you either apply bonjella, wax or just let your mouth heal. Your teeth are always moving and the sore will heal completely.
Put it this way.... you've been on this forum and no one has spoken about deliberately cutting their mouths to cope with braces, so you can be sure you don't need to do it.

Interesting idea. I can't think of anything that would work, because I think invariably the braces would rub some spot that you hadn't prepared. The discomfort is annoying, but using dental wax will go a long way in reducing it while allowing time for your mouth to toughen up. Best of luck to you.

I used to put small parts of chewing-gums on the braces if it hurt so much.
