You are Obsessed!

#1 Post by nahky »

Has anyone had this comment made to them?

When I began the process of getting braces, Its what i mostly spoke about to friends and family. When I pointed out little changes in my teeth and what parts of the braces did what... and started visiting this site on a daily braces, take heaps of snaps of my teeth ,some of them said i was obsessed! Even my girlfriend said it.

They just don't understand that this place is my outlet, a place where i can ask questions and get excited about the changes in my teeth and the countdown to my surgery date.

Can anyone relate?

Most definitely. I'm even worse now that mine are off. Example: I saw the midnight showing of Charlie and the Chocolate factory tonight. Johnny Depp had some seriously funky teeth going on. They were meant to look perfect I guess, but the midline was so off it was driving me nuts. His canines weren't right......my poor cousin was going crazy because of my comments. I am always pointing out teeth. I don't think there's anything wrong with it though. Caring about your own progress is great and will help you get through any rough times during your treatment.

Side note...in the Charlie and the Chocolate factory movie, Willy Wonka has flashbacks to his childhood and he has braces and this horrible looking headgear. His dad, played by Christopher Lee, is a dentist and burns all the halloween candy, making comments like "caramel...to get stuck in your braces. lollipops: cavity on a stick" It was too funny, especially for a teeth obsessed person like me.

My husband thinks I am obsessed! I don't say much at home, but in the car when I am the passenger, I flip down the sun visor in his car. I can't help it if his has a mirror that has no cover. I just automatically check my teeth to see the progress (ok, I do it more than a few times). Unfortunately, this drives him crazy! So, no more sun visor for me unless aboslutely necessary... Someday they will be off and this routine will end....

i am constantly checking out other peoples teeth. Its like when im having a face to face conversation, i have to look at their teeth. Then i analyse what problem they have. It feels rude of me and i divert my eyes to their eyes. I look at everyone in my family and make a quick diagnonsis, its like im the amatuar ortho. So many people can benifit from braces.

I'm obsessed... I just don't let people realize it! You see, I'm constantly checking my teeth and going on this site but I do it after my family's asleep as I like to stay up late. I don't feel like having my family know that I'm so obsessed with my teeth. It 's kind of embarrasing.

That's hilarious because it describes me perfectly! I try not to talk too much braces/teeth stuff at home because my family thinks I'm crazy for it-and I'm really trying to limit myself talking about it to my friends as well-because they also think I'm crazy. On thing that I've definately noticed, though, and I'm interested to see if anybody else finds this, but people seem to genuinly feel awkward and wierd talking about their teeth. Of course we don't, but I find that when I talk to my friends about it they get kind of tense and and everyone's like okay let's change to a happier subject....
I've come to the cnclusion that this could be due to many different things,
-people knowing that their teeth are bad and too scared to do anything about them, so they just steer clear of the subject
-people being scared silly of going to the dentist/orthodontist.

But it's funny what you said earlier about diagnosing everyone you see-I do that exact same thing and I thought I was the only one-when I meet someone, I just look at their teeth and think-overbite, slight overjet, canine's a bit rotated, etc. etc. It's wierd, but it's just what I see in people. Also when watching TV

Interesting post, it's great learning that I'm not alone in this obsession!

Boy, I am relieved! Looks like I am not alone. I don't even have my braces yet and I am already obsessed! I also am noticing peoples teeth wondering why they haven't tried braces. If I see an adult with braces I really zoom in on them. I try not to talk about it much but boy it is hard. After all getting braces at age 43 is a big deal, life changing for me. It is hard NOT to say anything.

I'll admit that I too am obsessed! I have a little compact mirror that I take out during work and look at my teeth probably 20 times a day. I like to see if and how much my teeth have moved. Just so I don't get caught by my bosses!
Also anytime I'm by a mirror I give myself a nice big grin

Can definitely relate. I can't speak to anyone or watch TV without noticing teeth, particularly over here with the "English teeth" situation! However this doesn't go down well with friends/family - ie. the general attitude is definitely that there are more important things to worry about, that it's superficial/vain, not that important and "get over yourself"!

I was more obsessed at the beginning. Taking weekly pictures and mailing them off to family. I think they were getting tired of seeing a close up of my teeth every Monday morning. I have slowed down a bit on the picture taking.

I do check out peoples teeth though. Especially when I am watching TV. As far as checking out my teeth, my favourite place is when I am at a stop light - in the rear view mirror. I think its because it is bright the sun is shining and you can get a really good look. That is until the guy behind you starts honking.

Oh, I am so obsessed. I am constantly looking at everyone's teeth and analyzing their orthodontic problems (in my head). Now my husband is getting them and I know we're going to be a crazy obsessed couple, sitting in front of a mirror for an hour each night, analyzing our daily tooth movement.

The other day, I was at my doctor's office and one of the nurses had braces on her teeth. I got so excited because in the 9 weeks I've had these braces, I have never met another adult with braces. So I squealed, "Oooh, you have braces too!" I was so excited but the poor nurse was so self conscious. She closed her mouth tightly and took my blood pressure without ever opening her mouth again, then walked out silently. I guess everyone isn't as obsessed and thrilled to have braces as I am.

As I said before, I check mine out in the visor mirror of my husbands car when I am a passenger. This whole thread reminded me of when I sold shoes for a living - 5 years of it. I was always looking a peoples feet@!! It took a good year after I quit that job to get my eyes to look elsewhere... I also check out other peoples teeth. On top of that, I have looked at peoples mouths when they speak for years - I think to help myself understand what they are saying. It is an unconcious action, I believe.

Obsessive Complusive is what my roommate calls me. I won't even date someone with bad teeth
I have even rubbed off on her...she makes comments on bad teeth now too.
I have went so far as to take a picture of myself now and white out the braces to see the true progress of my teeth. It's amazing...
I had to get braces because I felt like I was a hipocrit (sp) having messed up teeth but judging others on theirs. I'm well on my way to admiring my own smile...only 12 more months to go.
