I just recently got my bicuspids extracted for protrusion and I am just now finding out about the side effects of it. I posted my question here along with a picture as well
https://www.realself.com/question/calif ... er-worried#
I guess it is my fault for not looking into it more, but I took my orthos word for it saying it help my profile and "im gonna love the outcome". I asked the opinion of my aunt who is a general dentist, and my regular dentist who did the extractions and they both agreed with it. Seeing that I got 3 opinions of people in the dental industry, I went ahead and did it. Ive always been self conscious of my profile so I thought it would be a good choice.
My ortho didn't inform me of any side effects it may have, like sleep apnea and breathing problems. Before I got them extracted I asked if there was a possiblilty of "sunken" face and he said no because my mouth is just way too protrusive. I also expressed that I was afraid my full lips would look flatter and he said it would actually look fuller because of the way my teeth will now be positioned once the braces are off.
After the reading the side effects, I am terrified and am willing to get implants even though i just got them off. I am willing to stop treatment and see another ortho. All I've read are negative and horror stories of extraction, but has anyone actually had a good experience with their profile and extracting teeth? PLEASE LET ME KNOW, I am willing to send pictures too on what is a good idea to go forward with since my gaps are still open, and my ortho seems so sure that we made the right choice.
If I decide to go ahead and close the gaps, and I am not happy with the results, is DNA appliance an option for me? Or will I have to reopen the spaces and get implants?
THank you in advance!!!
What kind of effect will extraction have on my profile? I'm EXTREMELY nervous

First, I need to say, please take all the negative experiences you read online with a pinch of salt. Different people respond differently to the same treatment, so what happened for them may not necessarily happen for you. In addition, their individual case, what they needed done, condition of their bite, teeth, jaw alignment, etc is not the same as yours, so comparing notes is not going to be very meaningful.
If you do not trust the judgement of your current ortho or are skeptical of his or her proposed treatment plan for you, please seek a second opinion with another board certified ortho in your area, and not make your decision to halt or change your treatment based off on an opinion or opinions off the internet. The random strangers that you get responses from on the internet have not personally examined you, nor have they taken your xrays nor do they have your study moulds to do your treatment planning.
The reason why there are more negative accounts of extractions online than positive ones is because those who have had positive experiences just go about their way and move on in life enjoying their new smiles instead of hanging around as long as those who had negative experiences do. If it helps, here's a link to an old thread discussion on celebrities who look good with extractions: https://stuff.gl/3g37ej
As for your case, maybe you should take a step back and ask yourself what is your objective of wanting to get braces. If you want to get rid of the "monkey mouth", well, your protrusive profile has to flatten for it to happen. If you do not want a flatten profile, then your profile will remain protrusive. I shall not comment on your individual case since I'm not an ortho or a dental professional. But I can say though that jumping to the conclusion that all extractions are bad is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There are certainly cases and people who have benefited and can benefit from extractions. There are other considerations for extractions aside from just how flat or not flat the face looks, i.e. things like whether there is enough bone to support teeth in their straightened positions, gum recession, likelihood for relapse, etc.
There is no such thing as a perfect treatment plan. All treatments comes with some sort of risks. Some people will be more predisposed to certain risks, while others are not. Assessing whether an individual would or would not will be at risk for certain side effects is based on the judgement call and clinical experience of your ortho. So it will not be very realistic for your ortho to inform you of all the possible risks and side effects under the tree when he or she does not particularly think you are at risk for something to happen.
I would say have another chat at length with your ortho before you make a decision regarding whether or not to proceed with your treatment plan. Sorry for the long post, but hope it'll be of some help to you. All the best in your journey!

Hello! Sorry for not answering at this thread for such a long time. Assertives perfectly sumed up all the problems. Just to add that´s why I talk to my experience on this forum : to proof that good outcomes exist after deciding to opt for the extraction route, above all if you suffer from bimax protrusion. And when I see your profile photos I can agree that it is probably the best solution for you. And about mouth breathing, it ended in my case thanks to the moving back on my jaws so thanks to the 4 premolar extractions.assertives wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 7:54 pm First, I need to say, please take all the negative experiences you read online with a pinch of salt.
