First appointment and questions. Changing Ligatures etc.

#1 Post by Seraphina22 »

Hey guys I just had my first appointment with my braces and the dentist changed those elastic ligature rubber bands thing on each bracket. It was soooo painful when he put in the new rubber bands, is that normal? it felt like he was going to pluck my tooth off. I've only heard that it would be painful few days after the appointment, but never heard that it would be painful during it? wondering if anyone experienced the same... just so I can be relieved that it's common haha.

also my dentist was so rough when he put in the new bands for the back tooth. He pulled down my lips, pressing on my gums that i noticed blood around my gums when i got home. :/

And it's been a month and a bit since i first got my braces, and I've noticed some off-white stuff around the brackets and near the gums of my bottom front teeth. are those calculus or could they be bigger issues like decalcification (but it's only been so sort since I'm in braces, can this actually happen? (trying to comfort myself...)).

lastly, I also noticed brown stuff on the chewing surface of one of my premolars. At first I was so scared it could be decay but my x-rays around 2 months before showed my teeth were all healthy, and i heard that decay takes years to occur. So could those brown stuff be stains or is there still a possibility for decay (Please nooo).

Extra: I also noticed crackling/clicking/pop sounds from that same premolar. Heard it's normal as the tooth is moving but it's still unnerving...

My next appointment is in a week and a bit.

Hi!

About the pain during ligature changes - my first couple adjustments I found the ligature changing to hurt. Now that I’m in stainless steel wires and they tie them in differently at my office with the elastics and it is a bit painful again. I think it’s common. Even though your teeth may not be sore when you are eating, the ligature change is a different type of pressure, so it makes sense that it can be painful if your teeth are moving.

I can’t really comment on the other concerns. I’ve had my braces for a year basically and I don’t have any white. Did your orthodontist say anything about it at the appointment? I think if he/she was concerned they would have. Same about the brown spot. I have a small brown spot on one of my molars like you described and it was staining. It comes off when they clean my teeth. Keep up with your oral hygiene and dental cleanings and everything should be ok. I get my teeth cleaned every 3 months with my braces on. The one bracket that fell off may not have been bonded all that great. I had a couple come off in the first 2 months not due to me do anything wrong, and so they put new ones on and I haven’t lost one since. The crackle noise is normal. A year in and I still get that here and there as the teeth move! Hopefully that helps! May be worth a call to ease your mind if you are worried. It can’t hurt to ask!

Thank you so much for replying!! I've just started the journey not long ago and I must say it's really nerve-wrecking. I noticed every single small thing in my mouth now and freak out over things that would probably not freak me out before braces.
I've called the dentist about the brown and he said he'll take a look on the next appointment. As for the white, I think I'm just going to ask him to do a cleaning for me too (which should also clear the brown if it's stains)!

Oh can i also ask if cleaning would be painful since the teeth is slightly more sensitive now (and since changing ligatures hurts 😂).

No problem! I had a lot of questions in the beginning as well. I felt worried about every little thing. I still do, but different things now. This board is very helpful.

I didn't notice it to be more painful! I've actually had it line up a couple times where my cleaning was a couple days after an adjustment, so my teeth were at their peak soreness, and it didn't hurt to have my teeth cleaned.

Hi sorry to bother you again! I realised two of my front tooth is now very sore and slightly painful when i push on it. That clicky premolar is not clicky anymore but now it hurts when i push on the teeth at the front where the bracket is, and there's pressure when i push with my tongue at the back. It didn't hurt at all when it was clicky. Is that normal? I'm hoping it will be fine again in a few days!

For me which teeth are generally sore, sensitive to pressure or feel loose changes weekly or daily, and I've just gotten use to this as normal. As for ligature changes its not terribly painful but depends on if it's a tooth that's sensitive that day or they're tying it in more tightly that day.
