I was a tobacco chewer. I just woke up one day and quit. I've had several friends die from Tobacco since I've quit. And you're way, way to young to be burning butts. Anyone who doesn't believe Tobacco kills has their head up a very dark place.
Tobacco may be addictive, but death is permanent.
It's your choice. Choose wisely cause there are few second chances.

Oh heck yeah! I know tobacco kills. I do! Ive seen it happen. Its just very addictive, Ive tried the cold turkey method and honestly it just doesnt work for me! Trying to quit has been the hardest thing Ive ever done in my life. It feels like its something completley outta my power and it drives me crazy!

I never claimed it was easy. But when I quit, I never went back. It was willpower, plain and simple. If you don't have it, you don't quit.
I think many people are afraid they'll gain lots of weight when they quit. And it does happen. But I gained zero weight.
Stay busy, stay distracted, excercise, whatever...
It's still your choice.
Quit. You'll feel better. And your teeth will look better for it.

There's this really good site that had quite a lot of hype for a while around DC, it's
www.maryquits.com it follows a real person as she struggles and tries to quit. There are videos for each day and I swear to you it's all true, except her name of course, because I remember coming home from school every day in April I think it was and seeing the video of the day and how she was progressing. It's really good, very motivational, you really should watch them, what have you got to lose?

Evelyn, thanks for that link. My husband wants to quit and that site might be helpful. Now...if I can just tell him about it without him thinking I am nagging him....

Brandi,
My sister got on Zyban and it really worked for her. She said it made the cigarettes taste terrible. I remember whenever we were around other smokers, she would gag. Eww! Anyway, it's kind of like behavioral therapy in a bottle (somewhat). She got it much cheaper because her doctor prescribed her bupropion as Wellbutrin. From what I understand, she saved about $100 because Zyban is prescribed as a smoking aid and buproprion is an antidepressant. You might want to ask your doctor about that. My husband has tried using the patch (it works differently on everyone) and he would have pain where the patch was placed until it was taken off and had terrible nightmares. Unfortunately, if he didn't wear it at night, he'd be craving like crazy in the morning. Needless to say, it hasn't worked for him yet. Good luck! I realize that it's not easy, so find a great support group and keep trying.

Hi,
I want to give up smoking too. I've smoked for 15 years now and hate it!
I saw a programme on TV a few months ago which mentioned a clinic which offered high success rates..... It all sounds a bit strange and involves holding these little balls and sticking something stupid on your head, but I'm gonna look in to it further!
The volunteers on this programme were sceptical journalists and it worked for them! They said after a few days they ended up with black deposits coming out of their pores as the body got rid of the toxins. It all sounds very strange anyway. It's supposed to "switch off" the nicotine addiction by reversing the waves or something.
I assume they've got it in the US somewhere too.
Have a look at
www.monadith.com to get a better idea.
Good luck...... I'll let you know if I end up going to this clinic over here in the UK. (depends on how expensive it is!)
Take care

I quit with Wellbutrin and Nictotine gum. I quit for 6 months... yes I'm smoking again.
The Wellbutrin worked quite well as it doesn't necessarily make the cigarettes taste bad, just makes you not need them. It lessens the intensity of the withdrawl symptoms. It does have some side effects though. I noticed feeling dizzy and out of it the first week I took it. And then after about 2 months I had to stop taking it because I started feeling depressed. Funny that an anti depressant will make a non-depressed person feel depressed...
Anyway, it worked great for me until I had to stop taking it, and the cravings came back. I tried the gum but found it didn't help much. I managed to avoid smoking for another few months.
One thing you absolutely need to come to terms with when you quit: You will never smoke another cigarette in your life, ever again. If you do, you will start smoking again. I thought I could be a social smoker, so I'd have one or two when I'd go out to a bar. In a month I was smoking full time again. You also need to avoid friends that smoke and places that you would frequently smoke for a month or more. If you drink, you should avoid drinking for several months, or drink only with friends that don't smoke and will not allow you to smoke while drinking.
Hope some of this helps!

I'm not a smoker so I know that I can't relate to how hard it is to quit. But I took a behavioral psychology course once that said whenever you make a major lifestyle change, whether it be quitting smoking, dieting, excercising, etc. that the behavior is not considered to be changed until you've fell off the band wagon at least once, with most people relapsing at least 8-9 times before succeding. So if you try to quit and fail, just remember that it's just another step in the process and that each time you try again, you're that much closer to succeding!
Good luck BrandiJeane!

Wow, I didn't know that. That makes me feel way better about not being able to quit since that was my first time trying to quit.

For what it's worth... I made the choice to not smoke in my house or my car. I couldn't smoke at work so that wasn't even an option. If you force yourself to smoke outside only, they're easier to cut out, one by one, until you're down to a few. I found it easier to quit cold-turkey with only 3 or 4 daily cigarettes than trying to quit a-pack-a-day habit cold-turkey.
Good luck and be strong!
