Braces--first 24 hours

#1 Post by fenderella »

Hey everyone!

I got braced yesterday morninig...and i just want to say that spacers were CAKEWALK compared to this...I woke up with the worst pain yet!

I read that the first 24 hours hurt pretty bad, but it gets better. Anyone experience pain after getting them?

Getting braces was pretty awesome; I've had trouble chewing but that was to be expected. I got silver metal braces, with silver ligatures...the ortho didn't have pink

Right now, I'm getting used to flossing and brushing....and the pain

:D

Spacers were torture for me. I'll take braces any day of the week!

I had the same experience, spacers were not that bad but the braces are making life hell (atleast for now). All my front teeth are loose + inside of my cheeks are so sore after brushing against the braces. I cant talk or eat properly. Just waiting for 2 weeks to pass because have heard from friends that after 2 weeks there wont be any loose teeth and the inside of the cheeks will become harder so I wont really feel anything.
The future depends on what we do in the present.

Day three, which was Friday, was the worst for me so far. THe inside of my upper lip was starting to feel alittle raw, but the salt water rinse seemed to help.

MY husband has been out of town, this past week, so has not seen me in my braces, and says he can't wait to give me a kiss. I told him maybe not tonight. Looks like I have come up with another excuse...instead of "Not tonite, I have a headache...." LOL!!

LOL Karri! I know what you mean!

It's day 3 for me now and the pain is subsiding SLOWLY but surely. I tried the salt water, which offered temporary relief after attempting to floss. I've been somewhat testing the limits of what i can eat...I still can't chew ANYTHING...I just kind of suck on the food and then swallow it.

The worst part, though is that since I have an overbite, the braces made my top lip stick out even further, so I look weird. I try to cover it up with make-up techniques.

Quick question: about how long until you start noticeably seeing results? I've heard as little as a month!

The sore cheeks are going to come and go. Just when your cheeks get used to the brackets, things shift and they rub against new areas and the cycle keeps repeating itself. That's how I know things are moving; even if I can't see it, I can feel it!

Just the thought of flossing when I first got braces made me cringe. :?

Try some dental wax on the braces that are causing the sores. It made it feel like I had food stuck in my braces, but still helped quite a bit.

As for results, it probably varies for each person. I've only had mine for a week and already see some improvement. :)

ive had my braces on for 2 weeks now and my cheeks still get raw from the *%&^$#(*& wires poking me in the mouth!! i hate them...ive tried covering them with wax, bending them...nothing works...i go in today for an adjustment...im hoping my ortho can cut them really short for me...

question: does anyone experience sore tongue from the metal spacers on their molars? uggh...thats a pain that wont go away with wax either.

When I had this happen I called my ortho and they got me in and clipped the wire for me. Ahh what a relief!~

I occasionally get a sore tongue from the cleats on my bands too. I just make sure to drink plenty of water and put wax on them so they arent rubbing. In a day or so it is better. If your going to the ortho today you can ask them if you need to have the cleats on there. I think that sometimes if they arent planning on using them for elastics they can take the cleats off the bands and that might help.

Dont worry, this will get better! I remember how sore I was when I first got mine. Also, I think that if your having a lot of movement then it will take longer to "toughen up" your cheeks b/c the brackets are rubbing on new spots all the time. Hang in there!

What are cleats?
I've cut my tongue a few times on (forgive my lack of brace lingo!) the metal bands around my back molars. They're "frayed" on the bottom, sort of, and I think I'll have to ask the ortho to flatten those frays...I can't keep covering it with wax EVERYDAY! I notice that wires are starting to poke out, which they didn't before, so I'm hoping that means that my teeth have shifted a bit.

3 weeks with braces and barely any teeth improvement...but MANY contusions...

Hello fenderella,

I am on my first 24 hours in braces and feeling a little sore...I know it has to get worse to get better  so I am just waiting for that to pass and then i can start feeling better....but I know I am feeling sore around the molar bands ( I am not sure if the cleats are the round tubes that are attached to the molar bands) but they sure are making me sore  I have tons of wax on them and keep rinsing with warm salt water to help ease it...I am sure that all my talking today hasn't helped either :? but my that is part of my job and I have to  ..

Anyhow...glad that we can share our tough times and enjoy our good times together... :D

I got my metal braces top and bottom on the 15th of August about an hour after I had surgery for anchors. I was expecting something worse than I've had. I've only used wax a couple of times on the inside back bands that irratitated my tongue....that was a real pain. I board a plane and flew out the next day. I have had very little pain other than that. I have popped a bracket twice and have had one adjustment. I just haven't quite figured out where my bite is. I have 22 and 1/2 months left and we will see how this all turnes out. I have deteriorating jaw bones and am still going through a lot of bone grafts and surgeries to correct my collapsed bite. That has not been fun....the total cost of my new mouth is going to reach about $100,000.00. The ortho being the least expensive. I wish everyone the best of luck and a great new look!
