elastics - what do they do for me?

My ortho told me but I have forgotten the purpose of elastics...been wearing them for 8 months now.

First I had one elastic to wear on each side
Then I had 2 different size elastics to wear on each side
Now I am back to one elastic on each side

What are they for again...what do they do?

Well for me, I had to wear them to fix my bite. I had one on each side of my mouth from the front to back. I wear them only at night now because my teeth have moved so fast. But basically he is trying to set my bite so it comes down correctly. I believe it has moved the front of my teeth back so when i bite, it is straight. My guess is he is trying to fix your bite.

My ortho has told me I will have to wear elastics on my right side & I don't even have my braces on yet!!

I am excited about every step of this process though!
