In about 30 minutes I'm going in to have my spacers removed. (yeah!) Molar bands and the back brackets will be installed. (yikes) My young cousin (she is 14) has them and told me that they dig them into your gums! I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. I hope that it doesn't hurt too much. Has anyone had a pain free molar band experience?
My molar bands don't hurt! After an adjutment my molars sometimes hurt, but this is from the moving of my teeth, not from the bands digging into my gums. I actually like my molar bands... they don't break as easy as brackets and I feel freer to eat whatever I want. Good luck!
I was fitted for my molar bands yesterday and they really didn;t hurt...you feel a little pressure but I think if anything it is the little tags or hooks on the sides that will cause you the most discomfort. I would just see how they feel and if they are rough or sharp, call them and tell them you want to come in and see them...maybe just say...my friend had them and said that they were sharp because they had not filed down the edges....kind of a nice way of asking them to do it --if they already haven't done it...
Depending on how far your molars have erupted, they may indeed push into your gums. When I had a second pair or back molar bands put on, they put numbing drops on my gums before forcing on the bands. After about a week the gums got used to it, although I'm looking forward to the rapidly approaching end of my braces journey so that I can get my gums back in shape (I have slight periodonitis(?) just from the bracket irritation and inability to properly stimulate my gums.
Thank you for your responses. They did help. :O) So..I now have my molar bands, and it is really not bad at all. I have been biting my tongue, but as of this morning, it's been okay. The bracket attached to them (especially the tops) looked brutal, but really it hasn't bothered me. All that fretting for nothing. LOL. I was disppointed when they didn't change my wire though. They said I will keep my current wire as is (connecting all my teeth save the molars) until my next appointment. I wondered why, but they were so busy I didn't bother to ask. Won't make that mistake again.
coffeemouse, I bet they left the wire off the new molar bands so you could get used to the bands before they add additional pressure to your teeth. If they had attached them you would have had to get used to the bands and had a sore mouth to boot!
