treatment begins on my son now!

#1 Post by mary oregon »

After having a very long three years in braces, my son is in separators and will get an expander on Monday. It is almost comical, as my ortho can't believe how fast my son has grown up. She told me... He was just a baby when you got your braces and now he's 6 already. Funny how time flies faster for the orthodontist than the patient. It seems like it was a LONG time during braces. What was also funny is that after my ortho asked my son to bite down...... the reaction was "WOW!" I was thinking... that can't be good. He's got a class two crossbite and they need to fix that now and take advantage of the growth. I guess his mandible is actually asymmetrical. Go figure..... I've just finished with my second set of braces to fix my crazy asymmetrical posterior open bite. SIGH!!!!! Our little baby also has an obvious crossbite as well. My husband told me at least we were consistent. We'll be a life time orthodontic members. Oh well, someone's got to pay for all those ski trips, hawaii vacations and ski boots!

Mary,

That is really something! When I read your post, I was thinking, "wait a minute, her son is really little!" They do grow fast, don't they?

For those of you that don't know, Mary was one of our "original" members and wrote a wonderful article for ArchWired a few years ago about Braces and Pregnancy. She suffered a setback or two during her treatment, which lasted much longer than she had expected, and finally got her braces off for good earlier this year.

Well Mary, what can I say -- you're helping pay for your ortho's new Porsche. But seriously, it's good to correct your son's overbite at an early age so that the ortho can take advantage of the jaw and facial growth. Best of luck to your son and to your wallet! One or both of my kids will probably be in braces in the next year or two, as well. I might as well just give him my bank account number and say, "It's all yours, Doc!"

Mary, I'm right there with ya. I figure just about the time my braces come off, my older daughter will be getting hers. She's already done the expander. I'm hoping at some point the ortho will post the engraved brass plaque at his door that says: "This building dedicated to . . ." I've always wanted a landmark in my honor.
