I have a 3mm overbite but because I have TMJ my doc refuses to do extraction and his only relying on elastics, will this be enough to correct my overbite? It's depressing thinkin that after all the money spent and painstaking time I will end up with not much improvement. :(

I don't know anything about overbites, but I am being treated without extractions. I had a LOT of crowding, but tons of space has already been made without extractions. I was skeptical at first too that there could possibly be enough room to straighten my teeth without taking some out, but I'm impressed. Hope that helps.

How did your ortho make rooms w/out extractions?

There is always room for the teeth: they can always move back. However, it is not healthy to push them beyond a certain limit. That is why most people who have crowding either have an expander or extractions. At least, that is what I read somewhere...

Some room can be made by taking a little off the sides of several teeth. They use something similar to sandpaper although not quite as harsh to accomplish this. It doesnt take much to create some room for the teeth to "wiggle" plus if you have a deep bite they will probably create a larger arch and flare the front teeth outwards. Thats what they did with me and I have lots of nice gaps at this stage.

What Chris said is exactly what they did with me too. I think I might be further along though. My flare is totally gone. Overbite gone well 10%. and now wearing elastics to correct my midline a very common result of flaring is an off midline.
Hope everything goes well

I feel terribly fortunate to require no extractions. Probably wouldn't have done it in that case. I'm such a big wuss! I have plenty of gap spaces in the front areas and thus plenty of room for teeth to move. The techs yesterday were expressing some surprise that my molars remained tight even after a week wearing separators, given all the space I have. That's slightly worrisome - does it mean that my bones and teeth and jaw are set in their ways? That closing up the side gaps will go slowly? 0_0

I had one ortho tell me that he would pull 2 teeth to fix the crowding on my bottom teeth. My current ortho feels there is enough room to push teeth back to make room. Obviously, I am going with the non-extraction option.

Personally, I think in some cases (not all!) extractions are the othos' "easy way out". In times past they would use things like headgear to do it. Then they seemed to fall out of favor and extractions became the treatment of choice.

I think you need to trust your ortho, mine does not talk that much so I'm constantly asking questions. What I posted about elastics not doing much the trick I was giving my opinion, compared to headgear elastics didn't do anything to me, but that was me. Talk to your ortho he'll clear out all your doubts.

I think the thing to realize is if you go the NON-extraction route you usually get a fuller look (if you know what I mean). The decision the ortho makes is usually based on your profile too. Some people look better with a fuller look and others absolutely need the extractions to get the best bite and look. The best thing to do is look at a variety of before and after photos of patients, discuss your options and probable outcomes with the ortho before making a decision.

Yes, I have gotten exactly what Chris has. I have had my top teeth slenderized a few times, plus they were brought forward a little. As for my bottom, I have an expander and had them slenderized once.

I don't need any extractions to move my teeth. There was crowding, but by expanding and rounding my bite the teeth are moving into place. That being said, I will be getting my two upper wisdom teeth removed (I don't have any lower wisdom teeth) at the time of my surgery. But that is because when my jaw is moved forward there will no longer be any teeth for them to rest on (right now they sit on my molars), so they need to be removed.

After getting two different opinions, I chose an ortho who recommended not doing extractions. My teeth were fairly crowded, and my arches were very narrow. However, somehow (with top and bottom expanders) my ortho made room for all of my teeth. They are a little flared out right now, but over time I think he will bring them in a bit.

I also agree with others who mentioned the 'fuller' look. Here are some pics so you can see how my arches have gotten wider and my mouth 'fuller':
