surgery/no surgery

#1 Post by ssfw »

Has anyone been recommended to have surgery to bring their lower jaw forward and chosen not to have the surgery?

My orthodontist recommended that I have surgery to bring my lower jaw forward and completely reduce my 5 mm overjet. I told him I preferred not to have the surgery. He said he understood and said he could use an expander but said having the sugery would reduce the overjet to the maximum.

Has anyone chosen not to have the surgery and have a similar overjet problem and what did your orthodontist say about the outcome of the overjet? I still have time to change my mind about the surgery. My ortho said even without the surgery correcting my crossbite, reducing my overjet and making minor corrections to other teeth will make a difference in how my teeth look.

Jaw surgery was the only tx option I told my ortho I wouldn't consider. My end result won't be 100% correction, but he thinks he can get 85 - 90%, so that will be close enough for me.

My ortho has told me that I won't have a perfect bite without surgery. I told him I was fine with that and he said that he only recommended it as an option and that very few people actually took the option when the overjet issue that would remain would be as minimal as mine. He has a slight overjet which could be fixed with surgery but has chosen not to.
95% is close enough for me.

Hi Chris,

Was your orthodontic problem similar to mine, the crossbite and overjet? If you have an overjet, would you mind telling me what the initial overjet was and what it will be after the ortho treatment?

thanks,
