How long does it take for gaps to close?

You'd think after so long with braces I'd know this, but I never really payed too much attention.
I've got a large gap between my second and third tooth on the right side of the upper arch. I mean, I can stick my tongue through it. Today a power chain was placed again, and the smaller gaps between my two front teeth and such are already hardly noticeable, but this larger one has remained the same.
About how long is an estimated time to wait for such a gap to close? Will pushing my tongue through it out of boredom inhibit this closing?
