Hi Pinkdiamond

Don't worry it will be ok, just give it time. I too cried the second day, and it was at the Ortho's office no less. It's funny how emotional these braces can be. Everyone has a story behind getting them and it is hard. But trust me when I say it does get better. In a couple weeks you will start to forget when, how long etc. anything was, and before you know it you will be eating everything without any pain. (Even stuff on the do not eat list) Hang in there, and check in anytime. As everyone says this is a great group of people, with lots of support. I wish I had found this site before I got braced, but glad I found it shortly after. Take Care

Be generous in your mouth with dental wax. It really helps in the first few weeks.
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

Ditto - be generous with the wax. You'll find after a couple of weeks you naturally wean yourself off most of it.

You'll start to feel better and even excited about the braces when you notice the first changes. Take LOTS of photos from different angles (see my braces diary and other people's for examples). Keep all the earlier photos, and just keep comparing. Keep an eye on the straightness of the wire, because that is a great indicator (how the kinks in it smooth out as your teeth come into line).

Hi Pink Diamond :D

I'm also 33 and getting my braces put on next week, dont worry I am sure I am going to feel the same way as you and I think my partner would defo put money on me crying too!!

As everyone says keep coming back here whenever you get down about it all, this site is really helping me to keep seeing the light at the end of the tunnel even though my braces arent on yet, whenever I get second thoughts this is where I come!

Good luck to you

Okay, this is FRESH advice. ;) I have had molar bands on for 6 weeks and brackets and archwire on for only 4 weeks so far. So I remember the first bracketing very well.

The first couple of days were not much fun. I took a lot of ibuprofen. Eating was difficult. The teeth felt weird as they got loose here and there. I used up a LOT of wax.

Today... I am doing just fine, thank you! One tiny spot of wax in my mouth right now - otherwise, none needed. Eating just fine - maybe I shouldn't have peanut brittle, but otherwise A-okay. (I just got my first adjustment with new archwire and rubber bands 3 days ago.) I'm getting quite used to the things, I am NOT in pain, I'm not using painkillers. Eating, flossing and brushing are easy. They just seem like part of my mouth now. I can tell that my bite has changed in the molar area, but it doesn't prevent me from eating. My teeth feel great.

HANG IN THERE! Like you, I was despondent the first few days, but like everyone said, it got better VERY fast!

Stay strong. Things will get better as time goes by and as you get used to the feel of the braces on your teeth. :)

Oh believe me, everyone feels this way at first. I remember when I first looked into the mirror (i wrote a thread about this awhile back)... I was mortified. I immediately began to cry and was asking myself what the heck did I do? But it does get a whole lot better. I mean I am 20 and so I felt like I should've done this awhile ago. I understand your older but people really dont care when they see you braced. If anything, a lot of people dont even notice. And you'll feel so good about yourself and PROUD that you did this for yourself. Just keep thinking about the end result. And stay with it! You'll be fine! It's always a shock at first, but sooner or later you'll be smiling and thrilled with your new smile! Keep it up! :D

After I got my braces a week ago, I wondered why I got myself into it. Then I looked at my smile.... I try to think about it the way others on this board have mentioned....In one to two years time, you can either have braces and a pretty smile or you can settle for a not so attractive smile. Either way, the one to two years are going to pass...

People will stop talking about your braces and the pain will subside. Just stick with it!

After getting bottom braces on (top braces really weren't that obvious) I wondered what kind of mistake I had made! I could hardly close my mouth and my bottom lip looked hecka fat and It hecka hurt! :x But it did get better! :D I still do feel kind of funny when I close my lips over my braces because I just feel like I have a really funny bite! Some of my friends in the beginnning thought I looked like I was pouting! :(

Good luck!

-Hannah

Well this is my second day in my top brace and I am defo using a lot of wax now, my teeth are throbbing in different places and I cant put any pressure on them at all, eating is a bit of a nightmare so its been mash, soup and more mash!!!!

Today I did get a bit upset because the only thing I don't like is the fact that I can feel the brace all the time, I am so aware of it and it feels sharp, it actually feels like having barbed wire in my mouth! I feel like I want to put something padded over it just to stop feeling it all the time, if it wasnt for that I think I'd feel a hell of a lot better about the whole thing.

But we gotta keep our spirits up, its all for a good cause and I just keep trying to think positive and imagine what my new smile is going to look like! :D
