Something a little similar to this story happened to me last year. I had an adjustment and when I went to the Ortho office the door was locked and everything. I called, no one answered- so I left a message. Thankfully the next day, the receptionist called and explained to me that there was an emergency and the Ortho had to leave (to have a baby which I had no clue about lol). It took like close to two months or so to get a rescheduled appointment. Have you tried calling the Orho office again? Do you get a voicemail at least? At any rate, I agree with everyone as to visiting another Ortho. Good Luck.
I would check with the Better Business Bureau. They may have filed bankruptcy. No matter what happened, it is urgent to have your teeth examined. If you are close enough to the end of your treatment, another orthodonist my be able to remove them for you. It sounded like you haven't finished paying for your initial treatment, so continuing with another Ortho wouldn't be unethical under the conditions that you've stated. I don't think you would be obligated to complete the payments. When you do go see another Ortho, be sure to get their insight. If they are in the same area, they may be able to do a little more investigative work for you.
It's sad, but that's one of the things that you have to worry about when you are having medical treatment over a long period of time. It could have been worse if you had paid completely up front, and then gone back for your first adjustment and they were gone, which I'm sure there were a lot of people in that position.
