open bite closed with orthodontics

#1 Post by Joanne »

I was originally told that I would need upper and lower jaw surgery for an open bite and overjet. At my most recent appt with my oral surgeon yesterday he said that my orthodontist closed my open bite with orthodontics and that I would likely only need lower jaw surgery (also mentioned genio to make my chin less sharp, which I'm paying for as it's cosmetic). I read on someone's blog about open bites that are fixed by orthodontia being more likely to relapse. Anyone know about this at all?
My oral surgeon will know more once he goes over all my stuff (xrays, pics, molds) but I'm just wondering.

It sounds as though the surgery may be more to do with your overjet than open bite?

open bite

Now that I think about it, the open bite was probably due to crowding that pushed the front part of my teeth forward (had four bicuspids removed in June 2005 to make room). There are no guarantees I guess as far as relapse, but this is where taking care of my teeth and jaws, and following my oral surgeon's and orthodontist's instructions to the letter, to reduce that chance, and report any problems immediately.
Thanks!
