Impacted Canines!!
Hi there,
I am new to the site, and I bring my impacted upper canines with me. I have had 2 operations so far to get this sorted. Firstly 2 years ago (didnt work), and again a month ago, they have now attached gold chains to the teeth to try to help them down if they need it. Any one else out there had this done??
Start of a long process ahead of me !!!
Hi thanks for your replies, I found a lot of info on the site as you suggested. Its a long slow process eh!!! Needs a lot of patience!
Lucyloop, I read your full story to date, I found it very helpful altogether. Many thanks...
kk, I had a friend in our similar situation who had her exposure at the very same time that I had my first surgery couple of years ago. Needless to say my friend luckily had sucess unlike me! She is looking great now with only another year to go in her braces.
To get to my point, aparently our ortho (we have the same), told her that if the canine didnt come down that it would have to be removed surgically as having something dormant in your palate can cause problems later such as cysts?? Have you heard anything like this? I ask as it sounds like you left yours in the palate?? I am terrified that if this doesnt work they will want me to do another dose of surgery. I
I would hate to have to go through it again, as I had to go under general both times, this time I was asleep for 2 hours, got infection, out of work for 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for moaning, I know what Iwent through was a like a picnic in the park compared to some of the stories out there.
Thanks again for all the stories and the directions!

Mine were impacted until 18 years old. I had no idea because my baby teeth were still there and I had no idea they were baby teeth! I thought I was growing two sets of teeth!!!! Anyways, i know it's not the same thing but it sounds a bit similar.
I don't know how old you are but maybe they will come out? How are they growing? I hope all goes well!!!

Hi Finally,
Thanks for letting me know your story. I am 30 now, they realised I had them about 5 years ago, I was then on a waiting list for a while, then had surgery 2 and half years ago, would have had it done again this time last year but i was getting married so i felt it would be better to delay.
Currently I still have my 2 babies! They did the surgery up in the palate. The one on the right is definately moving this time, not too sure about the left one. I am back to the ortho tomorrow morning. I have a million questions for him now from reading this site.
Did you have to get help getting yours down or did they come down on their own? was it that you had 2 sets of canines in mouth at one time, babies and adult?
I will keep you posted as to what the outcome is tomorrow, dont know what to expect.
thanks
baz

I was about your age when I had mine exposed. I also had my babies. It was great, because the babies kept the space for the adult ones once I had the babies pulled.

FORMER IMPACTED CANINES,
FORMER IMPACTED CANINES,
Heya, Baz! We're the same age! I'm 30 too. Let's see...when I was about 18 my adult canines started growing out the palate of my mouth. You couldn't even tell. They just decided to start growing. I guess I'm blessed that I didn't have to have surgery to have them exposed. Only until maybe 6 years ago was I told that they were adult canines growing behind the baby canines. I thought they were extra teeth. Up until I joined this website and read other's stories do I realize that my case is actually not so bad. I haven't had to have surgery or anything like that. I just have a mouthful of teeth!
Good luck and please keep us posted. These posts are so interesting. I never thought teeth could be so very darn interesting.

update
Hi there again,
I'm now a bit more informed in my case. I went to the orhto on Friday with a list of questions! He wasnt expecting it I think, normally I just go in and out again, "thanks very much and see you next time", Not this time though.... Full of questions........
He is pleased with the progress my canines are making, they are happily coming down this time on their own!!!!!!!!!!!! So delighted!!!!!! Still early days of course. Have to go back again in January to see how they are doing. He is going to leave them now to come down further on their own for another while. He said that its best they come on their own. Still no mention of the date for the braces yet, I am patient...
fyrelight, my case seems so similar to yours! Multipe exposures, babies to be pulled, only wish I was finished like you now. The ortho said that he would be leaving the babies in until fit is fully necessary to take them out, he is leaving them in for appearances sake. (thankfully) and like you to leave the space for the adults.
Finally, you are lucky that you avoided surgery and that they came down on their own. But to be honest the surgery although tough at the time is not the worst. (in saying that I dont know if I could do it again), the thought of it is worse than the aftermath.
Tell me what stage of your story are you at? Have you had your extractions done? Is it just the canines or more that are to be extracted?
To further update you, following my list of questions to the ortho I thankfully wont need any more surgery. I was curious to see if I would need jaw surgery, seems very common from reading this site, but all is OK in that department for me .. Also it appears that my wisdom teeth (all 4), are happily lying dormant in a poor position in my gums/jaw somewhere. I nearly fell off the chair when he said they were in a poor position!! I immediately expected him to say "oh, and they will need to come out too - just schedule another 2 weeks off work for this recovery!!)' - but he said instead to my delight, they might never need to come out if they stay where they are - PPHHEEWWW!!!
I will have to get some other extractions done though - the obvious ones being the babies - but they should pop out no problem, will be sorry to see them go when they do take them, they have in fairness served me well!! I will also need a couple of extractions on the bottom set of teeth, he didnt say how many but my guess would be either 2 or 4. I think I can live with those extractions though. But all this is a way off in the future of 2007 sometime so wont worry about it until then.
I have waffled on a bit I know with this - if you are dozing off into the land of nod from reading I apologise ZZZzzzz- its great to be able to talk to others who know what its like to go through this. My poor husband must be sick of me talking about it. He said any chance I can get I am talking to him about it (laughing ) if there is an operation on the tv, he says he waits for me to start off with - "thats like the room I had my surgery in" or "I felt like that too when waking up after the general" - he must be bored to distraction! But we have a good laugh about it. Its amazing how it totally engulfs your life when you are going through it.
Thanks again for your advise and updates, and finally dont forget to tell me about your story. I will look about the pages to see if I can read all about it. Fyrelight you'll be happy to know (I hope) that I read all about your story last week. You have a great set of choppers now! It really is al about being patient. I think I will be looking for advise from you in the future so watch this space.
Cheers again.

Bazzer..
Heya, Baz...you did not bore me at all and I enjoy reading other people's dentition stories. My baby canines were taken out 11/14 (one actually broke and the dentist had to extract the rest). They served me well also. They made it look like I had straight teeth for so long. Baby teeth will not last for long. My adult canines are hiding in my palate and it's just a matter of time before they're brought into alignment.
Now, my bigger prob is my gap on the bottom. I had a very healthy incisor extracted because I had too many (ha!). I can't wait for it to close.
Good luck and congratsss that you're 4 wisdoms are in a poor position. Wheww, what a relief, no?? I love it!
Good night!

Hello again everyone,
Can I ask you all a question about the canines? While I do think mine are coming down SOOOOO Slowely!! Did any of you notice that the teeth tend to receed back up into the palate after sleeping and resting? I find that in the evening and night after a full day I am saying wow they are definately coming down but then in the morning I am disappointed again as they head back up overnight??
Is it just me? Am I a crazy woman??
