Sickness after surgery?

#1 Post by jadeli »

Hey everyone, I was just wondering, for those of who have had jaw surgery done, how many of you endured nausea or vomiting afterwards? And how did you deal with it?

Hello-

I had upper, lower and genio and was in the hospital for 2 days. I had no problems with nausea either. I was given something through my IV to control for it. I had a problem one morning (day 4) after getting home but had some prescription medication I took and was fine. It was only one morning and was a little strange because it didn't immediately follow surgery.

To be honest, it's not as bad as you imagine. After my surgery I had so many nosebleeds and vomitted so much that I was in the recovery room for 6-7 hours before going out to the ward, instead of the usual 1-2. I found out afterwards they had ruptured my sinuses, so it was fun times.

To be honest, the extremely tight elastics and limited range of motion in my jaw never even crossed my mind. When you have to open your mouth to vomit you just do.

Now, the tubes they put in my nose to control the bleeding - those were uncomfortable! But the vomitting, it didn't bother me any more than puking normally does.

It depends on your own body's reaction to the anaesthesia. I had no nausea or vomiting for either procedure, guess I must have a strong stomach. The hospital staff can give you anti-nausea medicine if you become sick after the surgery. Unfortunately, all you can do is just wait and see how you feel when you wake up.

I had upper, lower and genio and usually will vomit with any type of pain med but never had the least bit of nausea or vomiting. I was on mepergan (demerol and the anti-nausea med phenergan) at first, then switched to percocet with no problems at all. I was pleasantly surprised.

Meryaten it wasn't really so bad. Because I was still coming out of the anethesia it was like I was observing it in someone else. Now that it's all behind me it just makes for a funny story.

I know it's been said before, but it's so true, the end result really is worth everything it takes to get there.

I too got sick after surgery. I had the benefit of no elastics because mine was a SARPE. Hoca's right you just deal. It was worse trying to get my hospital gown changed after the vomit.

I too was really worried about vomitting after upper/lower/genio and did  But liquid in means liquid out-as nasty as that sounds. The staff are pretty free with the meds and if you feel nauseous at all-tell someone. Try not to focus on that part-I think the potential is there to manifest it happening. Throwing up after doesn't happen often to people-I am sure you will be one of the lucky ones. Good luck
