Any NHS people know how much they charge for white brackets?

This forum is for discussions relating to oral surgery for orthodontics.

Any NHS people know how much they charge for white brackets?

#1 Post by Happysmiler »

Just a quick question.

Does anyone know how much the NHS charge for white (ceramic) brackets?

I am starting treatment soon and will hopefully opt for white brackets on the top 6 front teeth, however the NHS only fund metal.

They have agreed that I can have white brackets, but have advised that I need to pay for them.

Has anyone got any idea how much they will charge me for thes?

Thanks in advance

Hi Meryaten,

Thanks for the tip - I did actually mention this to both the orthodontist and surgeon and they seemed to be happy about it. Which is lucky for me! - they do like to have the back teeth with metal brackets though.

Thanks again

I'm not sure about NHS. But where I live, I have to pay an extra $400 for the top brackets to be ceramic and an extra $400 for the bottom ones, too. I live in an expensive county and I'm assumign NHS is insurance? Hopefully, they won't be as expensive as mine! :)

Hi, I don't know whether the NHS do ceramic brackets but for private treatment in the UK they cost me £2,500 total for upper and lower brackets. Ceramic brackets were no obstacle for my treatment needs and for my surgeon although he did draw the line at lingual braces - if I'd gone for linguals I'd have had to get them changed to regular ceramic or metal brackets prior to surgery.

Thanks to you all for your advice - it seems to vary greatly so I will just have to be patient and wait and see - and hold my breath!

Meryaten, perhaps I will stretch my ceramic ones out to the top 8 (from top 6) I bet that makes a difference.

Thanks again all

Yeah, I'm getting 8 ceramic on top and 8 on bottom. I've seen lots of pics of people with the "social six" though.

Hi Jaydees,

Thanks for the information.

I have now got an order form as I have to order these in myself (as NHS do not fund them) and they are £14.99 each. I am having the top 10 in ceramics so it works out to £149. Not too bad at all, I didn't know what to expect!

Where in London are you having your treatment done, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks again,

Hi Kerry,

Yes, I am having surgery too - for an underbite.

I have just had my bottom brace fitted a week ago and as soon as my bottom teeth have moved forward enough to clear the top ones, they will put the top brackets on (ceramic)

The plan at the moment is to move the upper jaw forward and have genio - but this may change to upper and lower surgery depending on how my teeth move.

All being well I will be looking at surgery in around a years time, providing my teeth behave and move themselves!

I saw your post re how much this costs - I'll PM you as I am having this done on the NHS.

All the best
