Exercise Post Op

#1 Post by PCPFORMULA »

how quick did everyone start light exercise after their surgery? im on day 9 post op and have started light walking, although have had to cross the road jogging on some occassions, do you think my jaw is up to the movement?

it is SO boring sitting in the house all day!

I started light walking at 5 days, and built up to about an hour a day by two weeks. I wouldn't recommend jogging this soon. You don't want to do anything that is going to impair your jaws ability to heal and refuse together. Jogging might do this. My doctor told me I could resume walking and riding my bike at two weeks. I went back to the my regular step aerobics classes (which are very advanced, and quite intense) at 5 weeks. Even trying to keep things pretty low, and not too bouncy I could feel it in my upper jaw for at least a couple of weeks afterwards. Things are fine now though and I'm at 3.5 months post op as of today.

I would say to stick with the lower impact exercisises until you are at least 5-6 weeks, then gradually try adding them in. You might also want to call you doctor and see what he says. I know others who have been told no until 3 months, and some until 6 months. Just depends on what was done, how it went, and what your doctor feels comfortable with.

I was going for walks after 5 days, and did some cycling on my turbo trainer after 1½ weeks, but both of these are fairly low impact - what you don't want at this stage is anything that could make your jaws clash together.
I've been cleared for non-road cycling after 3 weeks so will be taking my MTB out with squidgy tyres and full shocks this weekend, and only over 'granny' terrain - but I'll be making every effort to cycle with my mouth hanging open so I don't knock my jaws.

I started doing yoga probably... day 10 after surgery. I couldn't do all the poses, like leaning my head back completely or anything else that put pressure on my head/jaw area, but by week 3 I could do all of the poses. My doctor cleared me for exercise the second week so as long as you're not putting too much pressure on your jaw, I think you should be fine!

I know what you mean- I get so bored sometimes (still wired shut) and feel the need to tire myself out or else I can't sleep at night. Good luck with that!

I was cleared to run at 2 weeks after surgery and did so without any problems! I don't like being housebound either and by day 4 was taking walks of up to an hour (early morning though so no one would see me and think I gotten beaten up  ). Cycling on a stationary trainer worked well too. I road cycle alot and due to the risk of falling wasn't allowed to ride outside for 6 weeks (no mountain biking etiher for 4 months because it is so jarring). Good luck, the more you move the better!

I done a bit of road cycling today, nearly 6 weeks post, just wondering how you got on when you first went back out again? I had to hop off and on a few curbs at some parts which did feel kinda weird, never jarred my jaw mind you.

do you think that as long a you don,t jar your jaw, some light mountain biking would be oright?<when you were out, did you have any bumps etc>, I spole to my surgeron 3 weeks post op and he said, on you go as long as your half decent on a bike, I did,nt due my jaw still being very numb and swollen. After my road biking today my jaw still did feel a bit weird going over bumps, is there a chance that 6 weeks post op the screws and plates in my jaw can move? it seems that everything I do at present brings a parnoid sense that I m gonna break or move something!

When I speak to my OS, as being in the uk, its a bit different with the communication with them, even at appointments, sometimes its like getting blood from a stone!, this forum is and has been keeping me sane<I think!>

If anyone has anything to add, please do so!

thanks

I went out on my MTB for most of yesterday (7 hours or so) at 8 weeks post-op, and it was fine. I was being more cautious than usual because the idea of breaking my jaws in an off terrifies me. I also made sure there were no jarrig or bumpy bits.

I wasn't aware of things feeling strange or loose with my jaw - it all felt fine. That said, I do tend to ride with my mouth hanging open, so at no point did my teeth bang together. In the evening, after I'd got home, my jaw joints and jaw muscles were much more achey than usual, but I think this is because I was doing a lot more with my jaws than usual. They feel fine again this morning.

My doctor said no lifting weights after the surgery. Not even heavier bags with things when shopping, so I got myself a shopping slave... eh, ehm I mean my lovely bf. ;)

I am also prohibited from running and doing harsh moves at all. I was out with a dog and was throwing him a ball. My jaw started to hurt a lot on one side.

thats me justed started my normal running<6 miles per day> most of the swelling and numbness is down, it surprised me how I ve still retained my fitness<not out of breath> mind you I ve not been eating any crap for 6 weeks and had no beer for around 12 wks, I ll prob end up fitter than I ve even been post op!

Did anyone see John Terry play for Chelsea lastnite? 3 days after a fractured cheekbone!
