Bleeding?

#1 Post by ThinK »

So I'm hopefully going to be having my surgery sometime within the first few months of next year. I've been reading on here several people's situations and experiences, and I haven't read much about bleeding. Do you bleed much after surgery? I didn't bleed that much when I had 8 teeth (including wisdom) extracted before I had my braces put in (about a year ago). So I'm hoping I don't bleed that much during surgery too.

I did, though whether it was more than most, I couldn't say. I bled from the mouth continuously, and from the nose every time I sat up, for about 20 hours post-op. The suction tube came in very handy.
The mouth stopped after that, but the nose would kick off again every time I leaned forward, bent over etc for 2-3 days after the operation.

I don't know if it was the wisdom tooth site in my mouth that was bleeding (I had one dug out in the lower jaw) or the suture sites. With my nose, it was the nostril that has the aneasthetic tube stuffed up it.

Like Meryaten says it will probably depend on what you are having done. I had both jaws done and don't remember any bleeding from inside the mouth at all. I had 2 tubes, one down each nostril to keep my nose open with all the swelling but also to suck out any snot or blood that was down there but I had them taken out within 2 days and I can't remember having any bleeding at all. However everyone is different of course.

I had almost no bleeding inside of my mouth after sarpe, but did have quite massive nosebleed for the first 2-3 days. Might be because I got the breathing tube in through my nose.

Ah well, I did have a LeFort I, which probably didn't help. Not sure if it's coincidence that I bled from the side that had the most impaction.
They squirted somethig up the 'tube' nostril before insertion, to reduce bleeding, so I think they did their best to control it.

It's been about a year and a half since I talked with the surgeon, but I know they will be moving my lower jaw back, and possibly be moving the top jaw, but I'm not certain on that. So usually one bleeds less with the lower jaw surgery?

Oh I don't want to scare you, but I did bleed from a BSSO, quite a bit. But in all fairness I should have used my suctioning tube more once I got out of surgery. They said I swallowed a lot of blood during the operation and I felt bad nausea so much so that about 5 hours after my surgery, I went in the bathroom and vomited a dark red everywhere. Like, do you remember that scene in "A Nightmare On Elm Street" where the guy gets sucked into the bed and all that blood makes a splash on the ceiling? Yeah, well, it was kinda like that. So I call for my nurse and by the time she FINALLY drags herself into my room she just looks at it and says "ohhh, I'm not cleaning up all that blood," and throws down a few towels and then puts them in a bag on the door. Needless to say, I was doing everything I could to get out of the hospital. But yeah, once I got rid of the blood on my stomache, I felt much much better and it was all temporary. But I would seriously advocate using that suction tube if you can manage it when you get out of surgery, although it's hard to try to do and keep it away from the delicate parts in you mouth, you must try.
