Half of lower lip is numb

#1 Post by fromjersey »

Had my sliding genioplasty Sept. 19. One half of lower lip feels normal, the other half is numb and feels hot. I have probably not remembered other messages on this subject, so sorry to be repeating this question. Brandy: you had genioplasty in addition to other procedures. How long did your lip/chin stay numb? Also, you said to Phil over a month ago to "factor in age for healing." And I believe I'm older than any of you.

I had a sliding genioplasty done June 21st of this year and half my lip is still numb and a portion of my chin. It's improved slowly and my surgeon said numbness could last up to 1 year although it depends on the person.

Yep....I'm 4.5 months post op and about 1/3 of my lower lip is still numb. It is hot, and cold, burny, and puffy feeling too. Ewok is right can take up to a year to heal, or may not. Mostly I had thought my numbness was due to my lower advancement, but I'm finding that many people have lip issues from genio too so....go figure.

Parts of my chin are still a bit thick feeling, but I have feeling to touch everywhere now. It continues to tingle and improve daily so I'm pretty confident that I will eventually get full feeling back. Wish I could tell you more, but it is what it is and I just take it day by day waiting for improvement.

Good luck to you, hopefully it will come back soon!

I still have a problem with the left side of my lower lip being numb. I do have feeling in it now so at least I know when I'm drooling. Just keep hanging in there, Helen. You're such an inspiration to me.

I am hanging in there and am the patient type. I slept 12 hours since yesterday and am feeling pretty good. Would like to repeat it since it felt so good. Thanks for the responses. I have found plenty of inspiration from you people and never would have gone forward without you.

Hi,
I am just over 6 weeks post op. I have had quite bad numbness in the beginning but as everyone says it really does change over time. A big help to me was to write down exactly what it feels like every few days. I just feel the numbness today and have really forgotten what it was like a few weeks ago. When I review what I wrote then you can see the progress.
Good luck and stick in there

What I notice is that it's less than half my lower lip that is numb. It's about 1/2 inch in center of lip that's numb. The rest is OK.
Definitely good idea to write things down. I have been lax about that. I will get hopping on that.

I had both jaws done, a bimax plus genioplasty and long term I have no numbness at all, everything normal so all of you hang in there, it can all return to normal given time. Also just had maxilla plates out and had numbness of my right nostril, top lip and teeth/gum but that is all nearly back to normal only 4 weeks post op. Numbness can go completely!

Brandy: I thought it was working but all I see is a little white box with a red X in it. I will keep trying.

I'm just about 7 weeks post op. I had upper and lower but no genio. my bottom lip and chin are numb, but now i can feel a tingly sensation upon touching all areas. It's just the surface, but definitely an improvement from 6 weeks ago. My bottom lip used to burn 24/7, but now it only happens in the late afternoon. I;m sure this will dissipate with time and I will be "normal" again - only with a great profile this time!!!! :) also when I drink something cold, i get this sensation that liquid is dripping down my chin on the outside - weird feeling.....

I'm about 10 weeks post-op (upper and lower w/genioplasty) and my lower lip and chin are still numb. It's hard to tell if it's improving at all actually. I haven't had any burning or tingling. I have had some shooting pains but it's been a couple of weeks since I've had them. I'm pretty concerned about permanent numbness.
orangecountymetal: That feeling you get that liquid is dripping on the outside of your chin? I get the exact same feeling, and you're right, it feels very weird. Hopefully it has something to do with nerve regeneration!

Also feels like most of lower teeth are numb. How come I feel no pains inside bones especially with titanium plate in there. Is it yet to come or will I not feel any pain there?

WHAT a difference in your profile! Amazing! Do you notice a difference in your jaw from the front view as well? I, too, have an underdeveloped chin l, and I am hoping-as far as cosmetics go-to have a result like yours from the profile, but wondering if it also adds a little visual width to the jaw from straight on as well.

Congratulations! :D
